The phrase “we are so back” has been thrown around a lot since Donald Trump’s reelection, and while that is the most prime example, a close second is the news that they are making Happy Gilmore 2. Why? Because Adam Sandler is for everyone. If there is any American living in America who can unite us, it’s The Sandman. At least until progressives get triggered over a joke they find to be problematic. Or over the fact that Sandler thinks October 7th was a bad thing.
Ok, no more politics. I’ve gathered you here today for cheap laughs, so laughing cheapily we shall!
The plot is… well, the same as the first movie. Only instead of being a retired hockey player who plays golf to raise money to save his grandma’s house, he plays a retired golfer who goes back to playing golf to send his daughter to ballet school. And he has four sons who are just like him. One of which is played by future WWE superstar MJF, who is better than you and you know it.
Critics will try, but it is next to impossible not to love Sandler moviesit is next to impossible not to love Sandler movies (and that is why Rotten Tomatoes has an audience score). I’ve always appreciated that he is who he is and his movies are what they are. Nothing but dumb laughs. He’s spent his career choosing an exotic location to vacation and writing a movie around it, serving as an excuse to bring his friends and family. And when all else fails, he does a Grown Ups movie just so he can hang out with Rock, Schneider, and Spade. We’re also due for his every-decade movie with Drew Barrymore.
Additionally, for us to “be back,” we need a return to comedy movies. You keep hearing that studios no longer want to make comedies. Theo Von and Adam Devine recently discussed how when Devine pitches a comedy, the first question is, “Why do we need to make this movie?” “Was there some deep, hidden message I should recycle more?” “Wait, so the moon is trans?”
“Because it’s funny” isn’t a good enough answer. At least, not for movie executives. For those of us who like to laugh, it’s the only answer we need.
But the best part about Happy Gilmore 2? It’s that Adam Sandler is now generational. My 13-year-old niece and her friends loved the first movie, and they’re as excited for the sequel as we are. The Sandman is more inevitable than Thanos.
