Elon Musk appeared with a black eye during a White House event marking the end of his 130-day tenure in the Trump administration.
The unexpected bruise raised immediate questions from the press corps and online observers.
Musk addressed the mark during the Oval Office ceremony after President Donald Trump responded to a question about the French president. Musk joked that his injury came from playing with his son, known publicly as “Little X.”
“I said, ‘Go ahead, punch me in the face,’ and he did,” Musk explained, noting that even a five-year-old can pack a surprising punch. He trailed off mid-thought while commenting on the strength of the hit.
Images of Musk’s bruised eye had already circulated online the previous day.
They were taken during a separate presentation in which Musk discussed SpaceX’s vision for Mars colonization.
At that event, a reporter asked whether it was more difficult to colonize Mars or make the federal government efficient. Musk replied that while both are challenging, space colonization remains the greater task.
He added that, over time, he expects Mars colonization to lead to a trillion-dollar cost savings, reinforcing his belief in its long-term viability, according to the New York Post.
As part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk had championed efforts to slash federal spending. Prior to Trump’s return to office, Musk projected $2 trillion in savings.
For roughly four months, DOGE staff worked across federal agencies to terminate grants, cancel programs, and reduce expenditures. Musk’s own title was special government employee.
Despite the ambitious savings target, the department’s website listed only $175 billion in cuts by the time Musk stepped down — averaging about $1,087 per U.S. taxpayer.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said those savings will be factored into upcoming congressional appropriations. He also cited Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill as including another $1.5 trillion in cuts.
During his farewell appearance, Musk wore a black “Dogefather” shirt and a matching “DOGE” hat, maintaining a low-key demeanor that contrasted with his usual high-energy style.
Online speculation quickly erupted about the cause of Musk’s black eye.
Users on X suggested everything from an accidental hit to more conspiratorial scenarios.
One user questioned if he had been punched, while another claimed it resembled a classic left hook injury, noting Musk’s delayed remarks during the Mars event.
President Trump later awarded Musk a symbolic key to the White House, similar to one he had given to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first term.
Musk told reporters the DOGE initiative was far from over. “This is not the end of DOGE, only the beginning,” he declared, pledging continued efforts.
Trump added that he believes Musk will remain involved. “He’s going to be back and forth,” the president said. “I’ve got a feeling.”
