The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hid the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic and stocked up on protective gear, according to a Missouri federal judge, costing the world valuable time and lives. Officials in Missouri are now promising to target CCP assets.
According to the NY Times, Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. on Friday ordered China to pay an astounding $24 billion for its involvement in the catastrophe. This decision may allow Missouri to seize Chinese-owned property, including farms.
The Missouri attorney general’s office filed the lawsuit in April 2020, during the early months of the pandemic, alleging that the Chinese government had concealed information about the virus’s existence and spread before shutting off the world’s supply of personal protective equipment, or P.P.E. Chinese officials expressed their disapproval of the judge’s ruling on Friday.
“China was misleading the world about the dangers and scope of the Covid-19 pandemic,” according to Limbaugh’s ruling, and had “engaged in monopolistic actions to hoard P.P.E.,” which hindered the early response to the threat.
China, the ruling CCP, Chinese municipal governments, a Chinese health agency, and the Wuhan Institute of Virology were all found guilty in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. After first dismissing Missouri’s lawsuit, Bush W. Bush appointee Limbaugh had it returned to him by an appellate court. In January, he held a bench trial at the federal courtroom in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The hearing was not attended by China.
Attorney General Andrew Bailey of Missouri said the decision made China answerable for its acts.
“China refused to show up to court, but that doesn’t mean they get away with causing untold suffering and economic devastation,” Bailey stated. He further stated: “We intend to collect every penny by seizing Chinese-owned assets, including Missouri farmland.”

The CCP member is the second-largest foreign owner of US land.
Chinese farmland purchases are increasing to the point that it’s impossible to keep track of how much it owns.
The Chinese government is protesting and is not accepting the decision.
“The so-called lawsuit has no basis in fact, law, or international precedence,” exploded a Chinese embassy spokesperson in Washington. It is not and will not be accepted in China. We will resolutely take reciprocal countermeasures in accordance with international law if China’s interests are harmed.
Bailey has made it apparent that he isn’t playing around, but it’s still unclear how or when Missouri would begin seizing Chinese assets. In order to find Chinese-owned property that could be taken in order to pay the hefty judgment, his agency has proposed asking the Trump administration for assistance.
With state politicians promoting prohibitions on foreign adversaries purchasing American soil, Missouri has already taken the lead in efforts to limit Chinese land ownership in the United States. Bailey’s latest attempt might intensify the conflict and pave the way for a landmark court battle between Beijing and the Show-Me State.
Although foreign governments may be sued in U.S. courts, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act severely restricts the kind of cases that can be brought against them. Judge Limbaugh stated in his previous dismissing decision that the legislation prevented Missouri’s lawsuit from proceeding. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit returned that part of the case to the district court after ruling that one of Missouri’s claims regarding the hoarding of P.P.E. was not precluded by that legislation. -NYT

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, a Republican candidate for governor, wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray, urging him not to “illegally get information from local sheriffs on Missourians who have concealed carry licenses.”
“The FBI has absolutely no business prying into the private information of people who have earned a concealed carry permit in Missouri,” Schmitt wrote. “On my watch, Missourians’ Second Amendment rights will not be violated.” ” I will use all of my authority to prevent the FBI, which has become ruthlessly politicized and has practically no trust, from unlawfully probing into the personal information of Missouri gun owners.”
