Liverpool FC beat Tottenham Hotspur 5–1 in the 34th round in the Premier League on Sunday, 27 April, securing the 20th title in their history. They are now out of reach for second-place Arsenal, leading them by 15 points with only four games to go.
Thus, they have also tied their arch rival Manchester United on top of the all-time English league title table, with both North England teams having 20 now.
Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool is the first Hungarian player to win the Premier League. Last year, he became the first of his countrymen to win a major trophy in English football (not counting second-division champions) after he won the tertiary domestic competition Carabao Cup with his team. However, this is a bigger achievement by orders of magnitude—the English Premier League is the most competitive, strongest football league in the world.
The young Hungarian National Team captain contributed two assists to Liverpool’s title-decider game, one to Luis Diaz for the equalizer in the first half, and one to Mohamed Salah early in the second half, making it 4–1. He was brought off in the 68th minute, so he was not on the pitch when Destiny Udogie’s own goal set the final 5–1 scoreline in the 69th minute.
This was Szoboszali’s fourth and fifth assists in the league season. He also scored five goals and made 32 appearances thus far—he has been a very active participant in Liverpool’s league winning campaign.
Overall, he has played 90 games in all competitions for Liverpool since his signing from the German side RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023. The midfielder has scored a total of 14 goals and made 13 assists since as well. He is the first Hungarian player to win a title in one of the ‘big four’ European leagues since Krisztián Lisztes for the German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in 2004.
The last time Liverpool won the Premier League was in 2020. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, fans were not allowed to celebrate the victory with the team. So, this year’s celebrations are expceted to be all the more ferocious on the streets of Liverpool.
