Former President Donald Trump’s relationship with the military was called into question by President Joe Biden during their first debate last Thursday. Biden painted a picture of Trump to Americans that portray him as being ungrateful and disrespectful to the men and women who died serving their country, calling them “losers” and “suckers.”
Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) sat down with Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on The Sage Steel Show and painted a different picture. In the interview which was recorded before the debate, he told Steel about his “favorite” Trump story.
“When we were negotiating the Taliban, while President Trump was still the president, President Trump wanted to get out of Afghanistan, but he wanted a conditions-based withdrawal, meaning that you do what we tell you to do and then we will start pulling troops back slowly as long as you abide by our rules,” Hunt told Steel.
He described the atmosphere, stating that Trump was in the room with Mike Pompeo, Taliban leadership, and a translator.
Hunt recalled Trump saying, “I want to leave Afghanistan, but it’s going to be a conditions-based withdrawal.”
“If you harm a hair on a single American, I’m going to kill you,” Trump continued. Hunt said that the translator was reluctant to relay the message. He then reported that the former president “reached in his pocket, pulled out a satellite photo of the leader of the Taliban’s home, handed it to him, got up and walked out the room.”
Hunt’s account of Trump’s attitude about the military contrasts with the narrative that Biden gave during last Thursday’s debate.
The quote that Biden was referring to came from a story from The Atlantic written by Jeffrey Goldberg in 2020. He reported that Trump poked fun at dead soldiers when he canceled a trip to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris, France during his presidency in 2018.
“Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” During a different conversation on the same trip, Trump allegedly called over 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood “suckers” for being killed.
Trump denied making those comments during the debate.
Biden also blamed Trump for the handling of Afghanistan, stating that he was at fault for the disastrous withdrawal of U.S. troops. While trying to vacate, 13 American soldiers and close to 200 Afghans were killed.
During the debate, Trump told Biden that he was trying to exit Afghanistan with a strategy that would give America “dignity,” “strength,” and “power.”
And as far as Afghanistan is concerned, I was getting out of Afghanistan, but we were getting out with dignity, with strength, with power,” said Trump. “He got out, it was the most embarrassing day in the history of our country’s life.”
During his discussion on Afghanistan, Trump referred to the soldiers who perished as “beautiful.”
“No general got fired for the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country, Afghanistan, where we left billions of dollars of equipment behind, we lost 13 beautiful soldiers and 38 soldiers were obliterated,” he said. “And by the way, we left people behind too. We left American citizens behind.”
