A historian known for accurately predicting every general election outcome for the past 40 years was asked if the Democrat Party should drop Biden from the ticket following his disastrous debate performance against Trump on Thursday.
“It’s a huge mistake,” Dr. Allan Lichtman, a professor at American University, told CNN.
Lichtman criticized the idea of removing Biden without medical expertise.
“They’re not doctors. They don’t know whether Biden is physically capable of carrying out a second term or not,” he said.
He also blasted pundits for leading Democrats astray, much like in 2016 when many incorrectly favored Hillary Clinton over Trump.
Lichtman shockingly dismissed concerns over Biden’s age also; a top worry amongst Americans and even foreign officials.
“This is all foolhardy nonsense,” he said, referencing Ronald Reagan’s second-term run at age 73 where he “won 49 states.”
Lichtman then emphasized that debate performances can be overcome, criticizing Democrats for their lack of loyalty.
“At the first sign of adversity, the spineless Democrats want to throw under the bus their own incumbent president. My goodness,” he told CNN.
As coverage over Biden’s ability to even serve a second term turned into a bloodbath over the weekend, the president’s family spent the weekend at Camp David.
There the family reportedly strategized their next steps, while mega-donors and high-profile supporters plotted their own courses of action.
The family, however, maintained Biden will stay in the race, expressing unwavering support for the president.
Hunter Biden, despite his own legal and personal troubles, was particularly vocal too.
Criticism mounts against Biden’s advisors for inadequate debate preparation, as Democrats scramble to address his post-debate polling slump.
Lichtman, whose predictions are based on 13 true or false questions called “keys,” recently shared his belief that Biden will remain president because “a lot would have to go wrong” for him to lose.
This stance surprisingly did not waver even after Trump became a convicted felon.
Lichtman’s “keys” focus on various factors such as party mandate, economy, social unrest and incumbent charisma.
“We don’t know how this might affect moderate and swing independent voters,” Lichtman said when asked last month about how Trump’s conviction could sway the election.
“So really, we have got to look over time and not rely on instant, unreliable punditry.”
“We’re not going to know much until the sentencing hearing on July 11, right before the Republican convention.”
The historian later admitted, however, that the conviction “might scramble things.”
“Here we do have, for the first time, not just a former president but a major party candidate sitting in a trial and who knows if he’s convicted,” he explained.
Lichtman has criticized pundits for their predictions before, calling them “sports talk radio” with no scientific basis for their picks for president.
Biden has lost two of Lichtman’s keys so far—the mandate key, due to Democrats losing two Senate seats in 2022, and the charisma key–but the historian maintains these are not enough to alter the results of the 2024 election.
“He loses the charisma key because he’s no Franklin Roosevelt or John F. Kennedy,” Lichtman said of Biden.
