After the disastrous performance during last week’s first presidential debate, there has been a rift between President Joe Biden and his staff. Politico reported that White House aides are frustrated and scared of their boss.
“It’s like, ‘You can’t include that, that will set him off,’ or ‘Put that in, he likes that,’” one senior administration official told Politico. “It’s a Rorschach test, not a briefing. Because he is not a pleasant person to be around when he’s being briefed. It’s very difficult, and people are scared sh*tless of him.”
“He doesn’t take advice from anyone other than those few top aides, and it becomes a perfect storm because he just gets more and more isolated from their efforts to control it,” the official added.
The top aides the official was referring to are Mike Donilon, Steve Ricchetti, and Bruce Reed, as well as Ted Kaufman and Ron Klain.
“It’s the same people — he has not changed those people for 40 years,” said one Democratic operative and close adviser to several members of Congress.
Three administration officials also reported that White House aides were left in the dark over the negotiations concerning the debates between Biden and former President Donald Trump.
“Everyone was told this was for the best,” a White House staffer told the outlet about the president’s debate performance. “Now, it’s the worst possible outcome. And we’re all trying to figure out why the people who know him best and make all the decisions didn’t seem to anticipate that this might happen.”
In a separate report from Axios, aides told the outlet that Biden is alert and engaged between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and that outside that time frame, he is more likely to suffer from verbal miscues.
After the aide’s complaints were released, Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates claimed that they were false. Politico denied the claim, stating that their report came from interviewing over two dozen people, most of which wished to remain anonymous.
Breitbart reported that the president is in an environment that is “more strictly controlled — and isolated — as his term progresses” as a way to influence the country’s perception of him regarding his age.
After last week’s debate, Biden’s image took a hit among the American people, reflecting the thoughts of his staff.
According to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll released on Monday, 41 percent of Democratic voters want the president to drop out of the race. Only 51 percent of Democratic voters want him to keep going.
The news of Biden aide’s dissatisfaction comes after many have criticized Biden’s staffers for not strategizing better.
“Everyone has been on eggshells about this sort of thing happening,” said one Democrat who had a personal window into the internal operations at the White House. “The staff watch him like a hawk to step in before a thing happens.”
