Hillary Clinton is launching a new initiative through her Clinton Foundation that focuses on educating young children about climate change.
This move aims to leverage Hollywood’s influence to teach preschoolers and even younger children about the impacts of climate change.
The former first lady and failed Democratic presidential nominee’s “Too Small to Fail” program is designed to prepare children for success in kindergarten and beyond by raising awareness about climate change.
Clinton addressed the urgency of this initiative in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
At one point she emphasized the role Hollywood can play in creating a “climate change narrative that is factual and entertaining and effectively communicates awareness and information.”
“There’s now research on this topic, but most people are not aware at all,” Clinton told the outlet at the top of the interview.
“Our hope is that we can help people make the connections between children’s mental and physical health and the impact of climate change.”
Clinton has been actively promoting this new initiative over the past month.
“One of the very first things we did with Too Small to Fail when we started it was to ask ourselves, ‘How do we reach as many people as possible to let them know they literally can build brain cells by reading, talking and singing to babies and toddlers?’” she told the outlet when asked about why she chose to engage with the entertainment industry in this effort.
“So we went out to Hollywood some years back to ask TV executives, writers, showrunners, producers to incorporate messaging about early childhood development into the storylines of their shows. We had 15 different shows do this.”
Clinton told the Reporter that the focus of the program is on the impact of climate change on young children.
“Little kids aren’t just small adults, they have a much more vulnerable reaction to extreme heat or pollution from wildfires, whatever it might be,” she said.
The program has previously worked with writers on shows like Orange Is the New Black, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and This Is Us to incorporate messages about early childhood development.
Clinton was later asked about whether a show or movie could still manage to be entertaining if a “scientifically grounded climate change storyline” was at the helm of the writing, to which the former first lady responded, “Yes, I do.”
“You can have a climate change narrative that is factual and entertaining and effectively communicates awareness and information to people,” she added, providing examples of other shows she likes that have included the topic.
She praised writer Scott Burns for his inclusion of “critical issues like climate change and pandemics” into media like Extrapolations and Contagion.
“And then of course, there’s always Sesame Street, which does an incredible job of trying to convey needed information,” she continued.
During the interview Clinton also discussed her daughter and the ongoing political landscape.
She even spoke about Biden’s disastrous debate on Thursday against former president Trump, maintaining support for the Democratic’s presumptive nominee.
“I am all in for President Biden because I think he’s done a good job and I think he has earned the right to be reelected to continue the work he’s doing to better position our country,” she told the outlet.
