President Joe Biden will reportedly discuss the future of his presidential campaign with his family after his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump.
Sources close to NBC News said the president will bring up the topic during his retreat at Camp David this weekend.
During the debate on Thursday, Biden often misspoke and had lapses in his judgment. His abysmal performance even led Democrats to call for the president to step aside and end his bid for the White House.
Biden was unable to deliver his prepared closing statement without stumbling on his words.
NBC News pointed out that two sources informed them that prominent Democrats such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had “expressed concerns” about the president’s ability to serve another four years in the Oval Office.
“So far, the party’s top leaders have offered public support for Biden, including in tweets posted by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Senior congressional Democrats, including Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Nancy Pelosi of California, have privately expressed concerns about his viability, said two sources apprised of those discussions, even as they all publicly back the president,” the outlet wrote.
Shortly after the debate between Trump and Biden ended, several Democrats in Congress and the media emphasized the need for the president to be replaced, with some noting that he had seemed “extremely feeble” and “weak” throughout his performance.
As Breitbart News noted, even top donors in Hollowood begun to panic over the president’s performance, calling on him to “drop out” or they would not donate funds to the Democratic Party.
A day after the presidential debate, Biden admitted that his physical and mental health is declining.
Although prominent Democrats have come out and defended the president, a source told NBC News that continuing his bid for the White House is a decision that Biden “and his wife” must make.
“The decision-makers are two people – it’s the president and his wife,” the source told the outlet. “Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation.”
Although the Biden campaign has maintained that it would stay in the race, a source said that “the only person who has ultimate influence over him” is First Lady Jill Biden.
“The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady,” the source argued. “If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.”
Interestingly, the first lady’s ex-husband, Bill Stevenson, recently rebuked Jill Biden for her continued support and defense of the president as his cognitive abilities weakened.
In an interview with the New York Post on Saturday, Stevenson said that Jill Biden has changed since he married her.
“The Dr. Jill Biden who I’ve seen on TV in the last five years is not the same person I married or that I recognize in any way,” he said. “She’s matriculated into a completely different woman.”
