Following his astounding debate performance against President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump held a rally in Chesapeake, Virginia, in front of tens of thousands of supporters, where he celebrated a “big victory” on debate night and suggested that the country couldn’t survive four more years of the Biden administration.
Trump’s comments come after Biden struggled heavily to speak coherently during the first scheduled presidential debate in Atlanta, Georgia, which took place on Thursday.
Despite Biden facing growing calls to step aside in the presidential race, Trump insisted that the 81-year-old incumbent would remain as the Democratic Party’s nominee.
The former president headlined the rally following remarks by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), whose name was once floated as a potential GOP presidential nominee.
On X, the Virginia governor urged Republicans to “come together” to support him in his bid to the White House.
“It was great to welcome President Trump to Virginia today! Giant crowd and amazing support. It’s time to return strength back to the White House,” Youngkin wrote on the platform. “Let’s come together to elect Donald J. Trump the next President of the United States.”
In his speech, Trump delivered a scathing rebuke of Biden over his poor performance despite having rested for a week to prepare for the debate. The former president went on to speak about illegal immigration, the environment, electric cars and former first lady Michelle Obama, among other important subjects.
Trump’s supporters cheered as the former president shared his nicknames for Biden, such as “sleepy” and “crooked.”
“Did anyone last night watch a thing called the debate? Man, that was a big one,” the former president said before the raucous crowd.
“Biden spent the entire week at Camp David resting, working, studying—he studied so hard he didn’t know what the hell he was doing,” he added. “He got the debate rules he wanted, he got the debate rules he wanted, he got the debate he wanted, at the network he wanted with the [moderators] he wanted.”
“No amount of rest or rigging could defend his atrocious record,” Trump continued, per the Daily Mail.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee added that Americans shouldn’t question whether Biden could make it through a 90-minute debate, but whether the country could survive an additional four additional years of the president in the White House.
Amid calls for Biden’s removal from the race, Trump discussed potential replacements, including Michelle Obama, saying she would be a good choice if her poll numbers weren’t as poor as they currently are.
“A vote for Joe Biden is a vote for failure, surrender, and disaster for our country. A vote for your all-time favorite president, Donald J. Trump, is a vote for stopping Joe Biden’s inflation and border invasion and for making America great again!” Trump said.
During his debate against Trump, Biden had trouble speaking and often had lapses in his memory.
After the event’s conclusion, prominent Democrats and longtime allies of the president suggested that it was time for the incumbent to hang it up and allow someone else to take his place as the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Despite such calls, reports indicate that the president would remain in the presidential race.
