After an abysmal debate performance, the New York Times editorial board is calling on President Joe Biden to step aside as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in a move signifying the 81-year-old president serving his country.
During his debate against former President Donald Trump, Biden had multiple lapses in his judgment and, at times, would speak incoherently, prompting high-ranking Democrats to call for his removal as the party’s presidential nominee.
On Friday, the New York Times, a longtime ally of the Biden administration, characterized Biden as an “admirable president,” but said the 81-year-old incumbent appeared as “the shadow of a great public servant” on the debate stage, adding that a continuation of his candidacy would signal him engaging in a “reckless gamble,” as reported by the New York Post.
“There is no reason for the party to risk the stability and security of the country by forcing voters to choose between Mr. Trump’s deficiencies and those of Mr. Biden,” the board said in a statement.
“It’s too big a bet to simply hope Americans will overlook or discount Mr. Biden’s age and infirmity that they see with their own eyes,” it added.
“Mr. Biden answered an urgent question on Thursday night. It was not the answer that he and his supporters were hoping for,” the liberal newspaper concluded. “But if the risk of a second Trump term is as great as he says it is — and we agree with him that the danger is enormous — then his dedication to this country leaves him and his party only one choice.”
The New York Times editorial was published just a couple of hours after Biden landed in New York City to headline the first of a two-day fundraising event.
Following the president’s disastrous performance, Democrats have begun panicking at the prospects of Trump emerging victorious in the 2024 presidential election, with many calling for the president to step aside to pave the way for someone else to be the party’s nominee.
Such chaos and confusion among the left came after the president repeatedly froze and lost his train of thought during the first scheduled debate against his predecessor in Atlanta, Georgia.
In one glaring instance, the president appeared to forget that under his watch, 13 U.S. soldiers were during his administration’s disastrous military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
In its editorial, the New York Times noted that the president was unable to perform well in the debate despite setting his own rules.
The leftist outlet wrote that the president had “challenged Mr. Trump to this verbal duel. He set the rules and he insisted on a date months earlier than any previous general election debate. He understood that he needed to address longstanding public concerns about his mental acuity and that he needed to do so as soon as possible.”
“The truth Mr. Biden needs to confront now is that he failed his own test,” the board said.
Shortly before the editorial opined on Biden’s re-election campaign, two of the outlet’s most prominent columnists, Nicholas Kristoff and Thomas Friedman, weighed in on the issue.
In a piece titled “President Biden, I’ve Seen Enough,” Kristoff argued that the Democratic Party has many “prominent figures” who could defeat Trump in November.
“But, Mr. President, one way you can serve your country in 2024 is by announcing your retirement and calling on delegates to replace you,” Kristoff wrote.
Friedman, who called the president “my friend” and said he was disappointed after watching the debate acknowledged that “Joe Biden, a good man and a good president, has no business running for re-election.”
