House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is making moves to try to help Trump campaign adviser Steve Bannon with only days to go before he is due to report to jail on July 1.
Johnson is going to try to invalidate the January 6 Selection Committee that issued the subpoena that resulted in Bannon being charged with contempt of Congress.
The idea is that if Johnson can do that, it would void the contempt charges.
Game On
This all got rolling after a 3-2 vote from the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG), the House’s internal legal body, to file an amicus brief on Bannon’s behalf.
On Wednesday, the majority members of the committee stated, “The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group voted 3-2 to file a brief with the D.C. Circuit in the case against Steve Bannon.
“The amicus brief will be submitted after Bannon files a petition for rehearing en banc and will be in support of neither party.
“It will withdraw certain arguments made by the House earlier in the litigation about the organization of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol during the prior Congress.
“House Republican Leadership continues to believe Speaker Pelosi abused her authority when organizing the Select Committee.”
Bannon was appreciative of the effort, but did not seem to think it would help his case, responding, “Speaker Johnson and House leadership showed tremendous courage in repudiating the illegally constituted J6 Committee and its activities/investigations.”
This effort comes amid the House’s effort to get its hands on the actual audio recording of Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur so they can compare the audio to the transcript and see if the DOJ was covering up for Biden in the transcript.
Republicans believe the audio will prove that Joe Biden is not fit for office. Uhm, I think we already know that!
