A new poll released on Tuesday shows former President Donald Trump leading in a crucial battleground state in the 2024 presidential election against President Joe Biden, Fox News reports.
The AARP’s survey finds that Trump is supported by 48 percent of Nevada voters, while Biden is supported by 45 percent of voters if they were to vote today.
If independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is included, Trump’s 3-point lead would increase by 7 points. Currently, Kennedy is not qualified to be listed on the state’s ballot.
The new poll shows that Trump is the favorite among voters aged 50 and over, leading 53 to 41 percent. The poll also shows that Biden still takes the lead when it comes to Hispanic voters in the same age range, leading 51 percent to 41 percent.
The Hispanic vote will play a key factor in the Silver State’s election results this year. According to a 2022 Pew Research Center analysis located in the AARP’s release, Hispanic voters make up 22 percent of the state’s population.
“We have a huge Hispanic population, so that vote will matter,” said Maria Moore, AARP Nevada state director.
Nevada is a state that everyone will be focusing on this election season. The state has not elected a Republican to the White House since George W. Bush during his second term in 2004.
During the 2020 presidential election, Biden won in a close race, winning 50.06 percent to Trump’s 47.67 percent.
After Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo defeated Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak in 2022, conservatives remained hopeful that Trump can win this go-round against Biden.
Lombardo reported that voters are hurting due to inflation, in an essay he guest posted for the New York Times, which he suggests will hurt Biden come election day.
“If recent polling on Democratic candidates in Nevada is any indication, and I think it is, Mr. Biden has a big problem to overcome, because after three and a half years, Nevadans are losing confidence in him to do something meaningful about inflation and housing and are left with the feeling that he just doesn’t get it,” he wrote.
The poll supported Lombardo’s statement. According to those interviewed, the top concerns facing Nevada residents were inflation, high food prices, immigration, and border security, all areas in which the Trump administration performed well, compared to the Biden administration.
If re-elected, Trump has promised to undo what the Biden administration has done.
Impact Research pollster Jeff Liszt believes that the election will be determined by split-ticket voters.
“When you look at the older voters, 43% are straight-ticket Republican and 35% are straight-ticket Democrat, but 23% are splitting their tickets,” Liszt told AARP. “[That’s] an indicator that there are more voters up for grabs right now than there may have been in recent elections.”
The survey polled 1,368 individuals who are likely to vote and was conducted between June 12 and June 18. The poll had a margin of error of 4 percent.
