CV NEWS FEED// In the midst of the Air Force’s Catholic chaplain shortage, a lieutenant and candidate for the United States Military chaplaincy was ordained as a transitional deacon for the Byzantine Eparchy of Phoenix in Albuquerque, NM.
According to an official press release from the Archdiocese of Military Services (AMS,) USA, Bishop Neal J. Buckon, Auxiliary Bishop of the AMS, ordained the Reverend Mr. Joshua A. Johnson, 2d Lt, USAFR as a subdeacon during a Divine Liturgy celebrated by the Most Reverend Kurt Burnette, J.D., Ph.D., Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Holy Protection of Mary Eparchy of Phoenix, at Perpetual Help Byzantine Catholic Church.
Rev. Mr. Johnson explained his parents’ role in discerning his vocation, saying that they “instilled in me a rich appreciation for the dignity and the duties of all baptized people to re-present Christ in the world through prayer and service.” The press release mentions that Rev. Mr. Johnson’s parents were present at the ordination, and his father also served in the Air Force.
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from North Park University and his Masters in Divinity from Boston College, Rev. Mr. Johnson “worked as a hospital chaplain. As I prayed with patients and families, I had an increasing desire to offer sacramental ministry, particularly anointing and confession. My pastor was immensely helpful in clarifying my vocation as one not only of service, but sacramental leadership.”
As a US Air Force Catholic chaplain, Rev Mr. Johnson will bring his sacramental leadership to “Catholic airmen, space guardians, and their families,” states the press release.
