A recall alert has been issued for some ice cream products sold nationwide. Retailers like Walmart and Giant Eagle are affected.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that Totally Cool, Inc., based in Maryland, has recalled multiple brands. These ice cream products could be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.
Recalled products include popular brands like Hershey’s Ice Cream and Jeni’s.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis. This serious infection sickens about 1,600 people each year and can be deadly.
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA alert states.
The FDA notes that no illnesses have been reported to date.
