A deceptive advertisement urged Trump supporters in Pennsylvania to avoid early, mail-in voting.
X users criticized the ad on Monday, as reported by The Post Millennial (TPM), ripping it as dishonest and “brazen election interference;” especially considering Trump has changed his views on the tactic in recent months.
The ad from Pennsylvania Values, an LGBTQ activist organization, begins with “MAGA Patriots, listen to our president.”
Then it rolls through old clips of Trump blasting mail-in voting, highlighting how it can be subject to fraud in different instances.
One clip depicts Trump saying “Mail-in voting is totally corrupt, get that through your head.”
The end of the video shows text that states, “Stand strong with President Trump against mail-in voting.”
Underneath the text reads–in small, hard to contextualize print–”Paid for by Pennsylvania Values.”
“Not authorized by any candidate or candidate committee. 717-537-1218.”
A user who helped expose the ad as a “lie” highlighted that it did not reflect “how President Trump feels,” adding it was “timed deliberately with his rally in [his] home state of PA.”
Another user rhetorically asked, “Why is this ad being run?”
He then went on to explain that “the left knows that if the GOP is successful at increasing GOP Mail In Voting in PA, which the GOP is working to achieve, then it will be much harder for left-leaning candidates to win contests in the state.”
“This is the first blatantly deceptive political commercial I’ve seen this election cycle,” he added.
“The makers of the ad are hoping that Trump supporters believe the ad was produced by fellow Trump backers, when the truth is that it was created by opponents of the 45th president.”
Earlier this year Trump signaled to supporters that it was time to embrace early, mail-in-voting.
This shakeup to the Trump team’s election strategy was sold as a modern way to “use every appropriate tool available to beat the Democrats.”
In a video posted to the Swamp The Vote website, Trump said “we never want what happened in 2020 to happen again,” adding, “keep your eyes open because these people want to cheat and they do cheat and frankly it’s the only thing they do well.”
“The way you win is to swamp them, if we swamp them, they can’t cheat, it just doesn’t work out,” he continued.
Later on Monday NBC elections reporter Andrew Argenge posted screenshots of the Pennsylvania Values’ YouTube video being unlisted.
“Ad was available in Google archive this AM, but it’s no longer available. Was flagged & removed by Google,” he posted.
He then shared that the ad ran for four days, being “shown 600K-700K times.”
“Ad’s YouTube listing indicates it was watched 230K times,” he added.
TPM highlighted that the ad was removed by Google over a policy violation.
