The U.S. Transportation Security Administration said it screened 2.99 million travelers on Sunday, June 23, breaking the record for the number of people screened in a single day.
The TSA said seven of the top 10 busiest travel days on record have occurred over the past month. Sunday’s all-time record came ahead of expected high passenger volumes over the coming Fourth of July travel period, which runs from Thursday, June 27 to Monday, July 8.
The TSA said it expects to screen more than 32 million individuals over the Fourth of July travel period, including more than 3 million on the peak travel day Friday, June 28.
“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement Monday.
The agency said it is fully staffed in preparation for high travel volumes, and expects to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes or less in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes or less in standard screening lanes.
“Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden,” Pekoske said. “The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”
To keep security lines flowing at airports around the country, the TSA is reminding travelers to have their ID and boarding pass ready at checkpoints. Passengers are advised to review TSA guidelines, pack smart, double-check luggage tags, and arrive two hours before boarding.
With high rates of unruly passengers in recent years, the agency is also reminding travelers to “respect frontline aviation workers.”
“Violence and unruly behavior in airports and onboard aircraft are not acceptable and will result in significant delays at security checkpoints,” the agency said. “[Transportation Security Officers], along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel.”
