Trump left a $500 tip at a restaurant in Philadelphia, PA with the note, “Vote Trump, no tax on tip”. He wants you to keep more of your money. Margo Martin is Trump’s deputy director of communication. In a video she made Trump can be seen writing a check at Tony and Nick’s Steaks. People in the background could be heard cheering when he said, “No tax on tips”. People in the service industry work hard enough.
Don’t tax the tips
Nicky Lucidonio owns the cheese steak restaurant and called it an “unbelievable” moment. He said Trump answered questions and “signed everything”.
Lucidonio said to Fox, “It was just unbelievable. He was talking to people, you know, they’re asking questions. He’s answering them. He’s signing hats. He signed everything.”
A woman came into his store, telling him she had a “big order” of around 200 sandwiches. Lucidonio responded with, “Wow, 200 cheesesteaks. I said, ‘Great, who’s it for?’ She wanted to help me. She said it’s for some special people”.
Trump will remove that tax
In a Las Vegas rally earlier this month he said he’d remove that tax from service people. “So, this is the first time I’ve said this. And, for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy. Because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips – people making tips.”
That promise has had receipts from places where people live on tips that now say, “A vote 4 Trump is a vote 4 no tax on tips,” or similarly worded phrases to show support for Trump. According to the IRS, tips are described as “discretionary (optional or extra) payments determined by a customer that employees receive from customers.”
Tips are given by a variety of methods including electronic, such as through a debit, credit or gift card, tip pools and tip splitting.
Government wants to tax everything
The IRS continued, “All cash tips received by an employee in any calendar month are subject to social security and Medicare taxes and must be reported to the employer. If the total tips received by the employee during a single calendar month by a single employer are less than $20, then these tips are not required to be reported and taxes are not required to be withheld.”
There are non-cash tips that are taxed as well. His tip sparked conversations and reactions online.
This reflects his influence and his continued support from those who want him back in office. It also reflects his efforts to connect locally. Trump isn’t afraid to visit areas considered to be Democrat strongholds, having visited the Bronx, Detroit, the Jersey Shore and now Philadelphia.
