Donald Trump’s sentencing before Judge Juan Merchan, scheduled July 11, 2024, looms in the near future. He faces a very real risk of imprisonment.
The State, led by District Attorney Alvin Bragg, will almost surely recommend incarceration – after they twisted the law to prosecute Trump, and after they have harped on the severity of Trump’s alleged crimes and his attack on democracy, how could they not?
Making Bragg’s decision easier is the upcoming 2024 election. Not only does he have the chance to put Trump in jail for the duration of the campaign, but he also has the opportunity to further his political aspirations. If Bragg is looking to the 2024 election, what are the chances that he’s also aspiring for a political position in the next administration?
Based on his actions before and during the trial, Judge Merchan is seemingly willing to grant the State’s request. He’s a donor to Biden and to progressive causes, his daughter’s firm, Authentic Campaigns, Inc., has made millions from Democrats since the indictment, and he severely limited Trump’s defense, including on the nuances of campaign finance law. And he, along with the State, violated Trump’s constitutional rights in a number of ways – many of which are the grounds for Trump’s appeal.
