Late last week the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the home of Democratic Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao who’s currently facing an active recall campaign.
The details surrounding the ordeal have been unclear, however, on Monday Thao broke her silence on the matter for the first time.
She still withheld many details about the incident and what may have precipitated it, but suggested it was part of a plot by “radical right-wing forces” aiming to oust her from leadership.
She particularly targeted conservative outlets like Fox News and Breitbart, accusing them of trying to “fan the flames” through their reporting.
Thao’s chief of staff announced that on the advice of counsel, the mayor would not be taking questions.
The Mayor began her emotional address by drawing parallels between herself and Oakland residents who have faced unfair treatment by the police based on their immutable characteristics.
She even shedded a tear as she praised those who work hard but “cannot catch a break,” The Post Millennial reported.
Thao questioned the timing of the raid and the swift media coverage it received.
“The timing of all this is troubling,” she stated.
“We should all be concerned … I have questions that need to be answered. I want to know what probable cause the FBI has, what evidence they have collected that justifies raiding the home of a sitting mayor without notice and without the courtesy of a conversation.”
“I want to know more about the handful of billionaires from San Francisco and from Piedmont who are hellbent on running me out of office,” she continued.
“I want to know why the day following the qualification of a recall election funded by some of the richest people in the Bay Area felt like the right day to execute a warrant.”
“I want to know how the TV cameras knew to show up on my sleepy residential street so early in the morning to capture footage.”
Thao’s home on Maiden Lane was raided around 5:30 am PT on Thursday, CBS News previously reported.
Several FBI agents were seen leaving the home around 10 am that same morning.
Agents also raided the home of Andy Duong, who’s family runs the recycling company California Waste Solutions (CWS).
Roughly 20 boxes of material were seized from the home on Thursday, many of which had Duong’s name written on them.
CWS has faced scrutiny over its campaign donations to Thao and other elected officials, per CBS.
Company staffer Teresa Hoang stated CWS has not engaged in any unlawful activities, noting that the Duong family has “dealt with a lot of injustice over the past three decades.”
“This isn’t the first time we’ve had to deal with stuff like this,” she explained.
Both “court authorized” raids occurred just two days after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters confirmed that a petition to recall Thao from office had enough signatures to proceed, per CBS News Bay Area.
Recall supporters criticize the mayor for not effectively protecting businesses from theft.
They also fault her for the city’s failure to apply for millions of dollars in state funds to address retail crime.
