A local surfing legend turned actor has sadly died in one of the most horrific manners imaginable.
Tamayo Perry, who had an uncredited role in “Pirates of the Caribbean” as well as a handful of other movies, was killed by a shark off the coast of Hawaii on Sunday.
When his body was found, he was missing an arm and a leg.
Tragic Death
According to locals, Perry was struck near Goat Island around 1:00 p.m. local time.
Not long after the shark strike, they found his body mangled, missing an arm and a leg.
Emergency personnel were called when observers saw the shark attacking Perry, and even though they responded right away, there was no hope of saving him.
Honolulu ocean safety chief Kurt Lager stated, “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”
Honolulu’s mayor added, “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected.”
To put it bluntly, Perry could shred in major waves, and he was truly considered a legend by locals and surf enthusiasts.
His surfing prowess led to Perry being cast in “Blue Crush” as himself. It also led to an appearance on the new release of “Hawaii Five-O.”
In 2011, he was given an uncredited role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” with is final acting role being Manoa in “The Bridge,” a 2015 short.
We all love to see these amazing athletes do their thing in the ocean, but I don’t think most people realize they not only put their lives at risk in these extreme sports with the ocean, but shark attacks are a real threat outside of the sport itself.
I simply cannot imagine dying in such a horrific way, but something tells me that if Perry had his choice, going down while surfing and falling victim to a natural predator in the ocean is not the worst way he could have imagined dying. Although I am sure he would have preferred being taken out by a wave rather than attacked brutally by a shark.
Rest in peace, sir, and thank you for the amazing rides over the years.
