Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich believes that the presidential debate will be a defining moment for former President Donald Trump.
The former Speaker said that while the mainstream media has already prepared to say President Joe Biden defeated the former president in the debate, that will not stop the reality of the dangerous world Americans see the next day.
“Look, here’s the biggest takeaway of all. When the debate’s over, when the Washington Post and the New York Times have printed their pre-prepared, no, Joe Biden did much better than expected, etc. People are going to go back to the grocery store. People are going to watch illegal immigrants killing and raping Americans. People are going to recognize that the world’s really dangerous,” he said to Fox News host Sean Hannity.
“Joe Biden, in the long run, is going to remain a person who’s cognitively declining. And the fact is that I think President Trump has an opportunity, starting Thursday night, to talk about a better future. Not just what did he accomplish, but why will his second term be even better, even more effective, help people even more? We’re on the edge of so many breakthroughs in science and technology and space, in health care. And President Trump could be the candidate of a visionary future. Joe Biden can’t be the candidate of anything except a doddering, decaying person who, frankly, if his family had any sense of decency, they would not have allowed him to run,” the former Speaker said.
“I mean, this is not a man capable of being president. Just ask yourself, remember the famous Hillary Clinton 3 o’clock in the morning phone call? Can you imagine Joe Biden at 3 in the morning trying to deal with anything? It’s just hopeless,” he said.
He also told the host what the former president should do if and when the moderators attempt to goad him.
“Sure. Look, this is a great test. As you know, we both know President Trump pretty well. When he wants to, he can be very disciplined. He can be in control. He can look beyond. And when he doesn’t want to, he can counterpunch with savagery when he wants to. I hope he goes in Thursday as president of all Americans, not as a guy just fighting,” he said.
