LEGO decided to join in on the Pride celebrations by releasing a video displaying their new promotional items for the LGBT community. However, some say that it’s a way to target children.
In a “Happy Pride” message on Instagram, the company introduced its newest line of toys last Thursday, which features drag queens and furries jumping off of a makeup table, sliding down a rainbow slide, and marching. The video ends with a dance party and confetti.
“These dazzling minifigures are ready for Pride with their very own spectacular Pride celebration!” The video caption reads.
In addition, LEGOs also released an exclusive product for June. The Pride Month Lego kit, which features rainbow LEGO figures, is for 18 and older, but the marketing is designed to attract children. The kit is called, “Everyone is Awesome” and was first introduced in 2021.
“I wanted to create a model that symbolises inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love,” said Matthew Ashton, LEGO Vice President, Design.
“Everyone is unique, and with a little more love, acceptance and understanding in the world, we can all feel more free to be our true AWESOME selves! This model shows that we care, and that we truly believe ‘Everyone is awesome’!”
The LGBT magazine Out reported that the characters are all “gender neutral,” with the purple one being an “homage to drag queens.”
LEGO has a history of creating LGBT products for June that were visually appealing to children. While the company puts on the box that their kit is intended for those 18 and over, many suggest that children are drawn to the colors and designs.
Earlier in the month, LEGO introduced a Pride rainbow float on their Instagram, depicting drag queens holding rainbow flags which looked like something a child would be drawn to.
While the video and kits are not directly marketed to children, many believe that it is since the company’s main clientele is minors.
X users had a lot to say about the display, especially since LEGO has always been child-friendly.
“Woke is probably the most compelling way to stop parents from buying Legos with ESAs,” one user wrote.
Some parents commented that they would be boycotting the company for making items that would be more appealing to minors.
“Time to #Boycott @LEGO_Group. We don’t want this crap in our kids playtime WTF!!” One parent wrote.
“So why are they promoting sexual furries to small children playing with @LEGO_Group,” another user wrote.
Many companies have faced backlash and a loss of profits for supporting LGBT causes and events, especially those targeted toward children.
