Bill Maher has expressed deep concern over recent polls indicating that Biden is losing support among crucial voting blocs despite his extensive efforts to appeal to them.
He questioned how this dwindling support could still result in Biden pulling ahead of Trump in national polls. “Explain that to me,” Maher said during one point of the airing last week.
“People seem to be saying we care about the pocketbook issues,” Maher emphasized during a panel discussion on Friday.
“This is across the lines of race, of gender. Everybody seems to be saying the same thing. It’s inflation. It’s pocketbook issues. It’s things like that, that hit us every day, in our everyday lives.”
“And you guys are talking about Ukraine, and Gaza, and Israel and democracy. I really think democracy is on the line. It just doesn’t seem to connect with the people.”
Maher underscored the alarming shift in voter allegiance, particularly among groups traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party.
“I mean, I could go through the stats here of the people he’s losing. It’s a little scary because he’s losing the people who are supposed to be the ones in the Democratic camp,” he exclaimed.
Maher pointed out that only 45 percent of Hispanic voters currently support Biden, a sharp decline from the 59 percent support he enjoyed in 2020.
The “Real Time” host then highlighted Biden’s ineffectiveness in scoring political support among these crucial voting blocs.
“[Biden] went to Morehouse. He said, ‘What is democracy if you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?’ That seemed like pandering to me.”
“Black voters under 50. He led by 80 points in 2020. Now, by 37. Still a lot, but he’s lost 43 points off the key constituency!”
Maher recently sparred with Charlamagne tha God over this statement from Biden, dubbing it a “zombie lie” to argue blacks have it way harder than anyone else in America.
Maher continued his critique of Biden by pointing to his efforts on student loan forgiveness.
“Student loans. He’s forgiven $144 billion in student loans. Only 36 percent of student debt holders like it! I mean, if you can’t win the people you’re pandering to,” he said.
“I mean, I get it. Politics is somewhat about pandering. That’s not even an insult. You’re supposed to do what people want to a certain degree, also be a leader.”
“But if you’re not winning these groups, and he’s lost 8 percent off women since 2020. And yet I read in the polls, he pulled ahead this week. Explain that to me.”
Maher also addressed the issue of identity politics, asserting that it “doesn’t work” and pointing to Trump’s “23-point edge” among Hispanics on border security.
“I feel like this is another of those issues where the Democrats trying to be so unracist are actually kind of racist,” said Maher, “because they don’t seem to see Latinos as Americans. But they care about border security too. They’re here.”
Maher later acknowledged Trump’s appeal to voters at a Las Vegas rally, where the former president promised to eliminate taxes on tips.
Maher also praised Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore for mass-pardoning 175,000 marijuana convictions, suggesting Biden should follow suit.
“Biden could do it,” Maher said, later adding, “That’s not a pander… it’s just good common sense and politics.”
Earlier in the Friday airing Maher and former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo discussed the implications of Trump’s hush money trial.
Maher’s audience was left stunned after Maher suggested Trump’s conviction could be good for the former president’s campaign.
“The trial in New York, the one he [Trump] got convicted for, was the greatest fundraising bonanza ever,” Maher said.
“That trial was the greatest reason people had to send their checks for $5, $10, 2$5, whatever dollars to Donald Trump. So I was always with you [Andrew Cuomo] on the one in New York, the hush money trial. I don’t think they should have brought that one.”
Cuomo responded: “That case, the attorney general’s case in New York, frankly, should have never been brought.”
“If his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn’t running for president. I’m the former AG in New York. I’m telling you, that case would have never been brought.”
“And that’s what is offensive to people,” Cuomo continued. “And it should be!”
