An Arizona family was left not only mourning their loved one after a freak accident but also questioning humanity after he was robbed and left to die.
The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. on June 17 when Jeronimo Garcia Guerra went back to fix his wife’s car, which had broken down in a Phoenix business parking lot, as he was driving her to work. While the car was suspended, authorities suspect that the jack collapsed, crushing the 69-year-old.
Authorities and his family believe that Guerra was pinned underneath the car for hours. Though he was located in a parking lot with foot traffic and close to a busy road, no one made a 911 call until around noon. By that time, Guerra had succumbed to his injuries.
“Who knows when the car really fell on him,” his daughter, Monica, said. “Who knows how long he was under there.”
The incident happened only two miles away from Monica’s residence. When the police arrived, they discovered that thieves had stolen items from his pockets, along with Monica’s car. The situation has left the family heartbroken, with more questions than answers.
“After everything, they went through my dad’s pockets and my mom’s car and they saw them leave with my car,” she said.
ABC15 reported that an unidentified person approached Guerra while he was pinned under his car, robbed him, and then proceeded to steal his daughter’s car.
How Guerra died reminded his son, Jerry Garcia, Jr., of something that his father had taught him.
“He always believed nobody out there is going to help you,” he said. “In this situation, he was right.”
The car was found abandoned, close to the area the next day. For Monica, it was not about the money or the car. It was about a human being needing help and being left to die alone in such a cruel manner.
“That’s somebody’s dad, somebody’s husband, a grandparent, somebody’s best friend. He’s my person. And I don’t have that anymore because somebody couldn’t stop and check,” she said.
Police believe that the freak accident with the jack was not intentional. No arrests have been made, but they are looking into surveillance footage close to the scene to help with their investigation, WSFA12 reported.
A GoFundMe account was created by Guerra’s daughter-in-law, April Adams, to help the family make final arrangements.
“On June 17, 2024 Jeronimo Garcia Guerra, (beloved husband, father, Tata, father-in-law, and friend) lost his life in an accident while repairing a vehicle (with extenuating circumstances),” the statement reads.
“We are asking for help as we are preparing to lay him to rest. He leaves behind his wife Margarita, 2 children, Monica (Ramiro) and little Margarita and Michael (Mijo), and Jerry (April). Any help at this time would be grateful.”
As of Monday afternoon, the family has raised more than $6,000.
