A young baby died after being left in the car for hours, just two months after being adopted by two gay men from California.
The incident happened in an East County neighborhood in San Diego around 12:30 a.m. on June 13. Diana Sofia De Los Santos was left in Romer and Jayson de Los Santos’ SUV for hours before a family member realized that she was there, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. She was just over two months old.
Paramedics rushed the tiny baby girl to Sharp Grossmont Hospital, where she passed away.
The Daily Mail reported that Romer is employed at Jama Software as a senior consultant, while Jayson stays home to attend to their two-year-old son, who was also adopted.
In their adoption profile, the men wrote that their goal was to “raise healthy, responsible, and most importantly, kind adults.”
The men flew to Arizona in April to adopt Diana, who was only a newborn. They assured the newborn’s parents that they could visit her anytime they wanted and would receive as many photos as they wished. Sadly, the men could not keep that promise.
Neighbors were saddened to hear about Diana’s passing. Neighbors reported that they seemed “like a nice family who wanted to give a couple of kids a good life,” per the Daily Mail. “It’s just a shame it didn’t turn out that way.”
Another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told NBC 7 about the night that Diana took her last breath. The neighbor had a Ring doorbell camera that recorded several police officers and first responders arriving at the home with lights flashing.
“They were in there a minute, two minutes maybe,” the neighbor said. “Then they left, so we knew something bad happened.”
“I can’t fathom leaving a kid in a car,” the neighbor said. “We’ve seen it happen every single year, we see a child lose their life.”
Many on social media also wondered how the young baby could have been left alone for hours before anyone noticed.
“Gay couple…. Makes sense now,” said one X user.
“Never had a chance,” another user wrote.
The Post Millennial reported that the temperature was around 63F but over 100F inside the car, making it deadly to leave children unattended.
While California requires a $100 fine for anyone caught leaving a child six and under in a car where temperatures can reach deadly levels, it is not enough to deter people. Police have advised the public to never leave children in a hot car, even for a second.
“Summer routines can shift unexpectedly,” said police. “Even the best parents can forget a quiet or sleeping child is in the backseat of a car.”
An investigation is underway to determine who was responsible for leaving Diana in the car and if there will be charges. In cases where parents sincerely were unaware that their children were left in the car, the state usually files no charges since the loss of a child is considered unbearable and punishment enough.
