A tragic incident unfolded on May 30 near the intersection of 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue in Minneapolis, where Officer Mitchell was ambushed and killed while responding to a shooting. Video footage from the scene reveals the harrowing moments leading up to the attack and highlights the bravery and dedication of the officers involved.
Officer Mitchell arrived at the scene following reports of a shooting and quickly assessed the situation. “It looks like we have at least two victims outside at the location, bleeding,” he communicated over the radio before stepping out of his squad car. Upon arrival, he noticed the shooter, 35-year-old Mustafa Mohamed, lying on the ground, appearing injured.
“Who shot you? Who shot you?” Mitchell asked Mohamed while preparing to provide first aid by putting on blue latex gloves. He then inquired if there were more victims inside, waving toward a nearby apartment building. It was at this moment that the video shows Mohamed pulling out a handgun. The footage cuts off just before Mohamed fires at Mitchell.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara was visibly emotional while reviewing the footage of his fallen colleague. “He was very suddenly and without provocation ambushed and assassinated,” O’Hara stated, emphasizing that Mitchell had been following his training to assist those in need.
A second video captures the response of Officer Luke Kittock, who arrived at the scene moments later, after Mohamed had already fired at several responding officers, a firefighter, and other individuals. Kittock, armed with a rifle, was guided by civilians taking cover behind a parked SUV. They directed him and other officers toward the gunman’s location.
Kittock and Officer Nicholas Kapinos are seen in the video exchanging gunfire with Mohamed before taking cover behind a brick wall. They then advanced towards Mohamed once he was down. Mohamed was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further investigation revealed that Mohamed had shot two people inside an apartment building before Mitchell arrived. One victim, 32-year-old Osman Said Jimale, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim, 36-year-old Mohamed Bashir Aden, succumbed to his injuries a week later.
This tragic event underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the ultimate sacrifice they may be called upon to make while protecting their communities. Chief O’Hara’s emotional response highlights the deep loss felt by the Minneapolis Police Department and the community they serve. As the city mourns the loss of Officer Mitchell, his bravery and dedication to duty will be remembered and honored.
