Former President Donald Trump has decided on who he will choose as his running mate. He made the announcement on Saturday in Philadelphia during a campaign stop at a restaurant when asked by a reporter from NBC News.
“In my mind, yeah,” said Trump. He also hinted that the person will possibly be in attendance for his much-anticipated debate with President Joe Biden on Thursday in Atlanta.
“They’ll be there. I think we have a lot of people coming.”
Trump also stated that “nobody knows” who his running mate will be, not even the person he has chosen. The former president mentioned, however, that he would make the announcement sometime around the Republican National Convention.
“Maybe a little before, but could be at the convention,” Trump said. “But we’ll have some great people.”
Trump’s announcement caused a lot of media attention with many trying to figure out the identity of the mystery candidate. When Newsweek reached out to the former president regarding his Saturday comments about his running mate, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung’s response left the outlet in suspense.
“Stay tuned!” He replied.
There has been a lot of commotion revolving around who Trump would choose as a running mate, even before the Republican primaries were over. Even then, the former president praised several individuals, stating that any of them would be great vice presidential picks.
Several sources told NBC News that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R) and Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) were the top two contenders for vice president. They also reported that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is also in the running.
Other names that have been hinted at are Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Rep. Elise Stfanik (R-NY), and the former president’s Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Daily Mail reported.
In a Fox News appearance in February, Trump personally confirmed that he was looking at South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R), Flordia Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy. He also mentioned Scott and Donalds.
While many are speculating on who his pick for vice president will be, senior Trump campaign adviser Brian Hughes cleared the air in a statement regarding his vice presidential pick.
“As President Trump has said himself, the top criteria in selecting a vice president is a strong leader who will make a great president for eight years after his next four-year term concludes,” Hughes said. “But anyone telling you they know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying unless that person is named Donald J. Trump.”
Thursday’s debate is sure to have everyone paying attention since the former president said that his vice presidential pick would “most likely” be present.
While it’s anyone’s guess as to who the former president chose as his running mate, no one will know for sure until the Republican National Convention, which will take place in Milwaukee July 15-18.
