On Saturday, Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) attempted to rally support for Bowman’s struggling primary campaign in the Bronx, but only managed to showcase the increasing division within the Democratic Party.
The New York Post reported that Bowman, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) held a “get out and vote” rally at St. Mary’s Park. Bowman was seen flexing his muscles and threatening to show “who the f-ck we are.” Later, AOC stormed the stage, chaotically jumping and flailing as a Cardi B song played in the background, knocking over equipment and ranting about “kicking some Wall Street ass” to the crowd of 300.
“We are gonna show them who the f— we are! We are gonna show them who the f— we are!” Bowman shouted.
He later lifted a stool over his head, calling on the crowd to chant “ceasefire now,” and ripping the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). This pro-Israel group has repeatedly fought Bowman over his support of Palestine and criticisms of Israel.
“Our people are more powerful than their power. It is time for us to show them the real power of the people. We’re going to show them how mighty we are … We are gonna show f—ing AIPAC the power of the motherf—ing South Bronx,” he said.
However, not all of the event’s attendees were as supportive as the 300 within the park’s gates. Outside the park, anti-Israel group Within Our Lifetime, headed by Nerdeen Kiswani and Fatima Mousa, led a counterprotest “Flood the Bronx for Gaza,” labeling both Sanders and AOC as “sellouts” for their refusal to go all-in on Palestine, the Post reported.
“For class war to free Palestine! Dump Genocide Joe and the Squad,” shouted members of the crowd.
“If Bowman and the rest of them claim to be allies of the Palestinian people, the bare minimum is not endorsing the person we have been protesting against the last nine months and who has enabled the genocide of the people in Gaza,” said Kiswani.
However, the counterprotest was largely ignored by the event attendees, as the various speakers refused to acknowledge it, rather taking time to promote Bowman and bashing AIPAC, which has spent a record-shattering $14.5 million on TV, social media, and digital ads to go after Bowman, the Post reported.
“Are we ready to take on AIPAC?” shouted Ocasio-Cortez, drawing cheers from the crowd. “Are we ready to kick some Wall Street ass? Because we are tired of having corporate lobbies trying to buy up our communities and sell them to us. We all know why we’re here.”
“AIPAC is scared to death,” Bowman claimed, adding that he wasn’t concerned about the funds being raised against him. “That is why they are spending record amounts of money in this race. They are afraid. They have already lost.”
“This movement is more powerful than their money,” he added. “Our people are more powerful than their power. It is time for us to show them the real power of the people. We’re going to show them how mighty we are.”
