After seven years, Snopes, the liberal-biased fact checker, finally admitted that former President Donald Trump never said that neo-Nazis were “very fine people” on Saturday, a statement that Democratic politicians and liberal media outlets have used for years to claim that he was in fact a bigot.
The statement, which went viral, came from a speech that Trump gave in August 2017 while president during a press conference held in Charlottesville, Va., after his “Unite the Right” rally.
After the former president said that there were “very fine people on both sides,” social media and news outlets exploded, condemning what they deemed as hate speech. For years, conservatives have argued that Trump’s words had been taken out of context. The liberal media and politicians were quick to call his supporters bigots and racists.
“While Trump did say that there were ‘very fine people on both sides,’ he also specifically noted that he was not talking about neo-Nazis and white supremacists and said they should be ‘condemned totally.’Therefore, we have rated this claim ‘False,’” Snopes wrote.
The fact-checker even went as far as providing a transcript of the original video from C-SPAN to prove to anyone who still has doubts about what was said.
According to Snopes, the “very fine people” comment “spread like wildfire” and was used by Trump’s opponents, particularly President Joe Biden, who was quick to use the phrase in his 2020 presidential campaign.
Both Democrats and Republicans, including Trump, condemned the actions that took place in Charlottesville, which resulted in three deaths and over a dozen injuries. The former president even stated that there was “no place in America” for those types of protests and violent behavior.
Scopes’ decision to revise their statement comes just days before Trump and Biden are to meet in their first 2024 debate. During the 2020 debates, Biden was quick to use the “very fine people” quote against Trump, as well as in his campaign videos. This time, Biden will have to erase Charlottesville from his artillery.
Social media lit up after Scopes admitted its wrongdoing.
Jason Miller, Trump’s senior advisor, shared his views about the acknowledgment on X. “Snopes forgot to turn off the seven-year delayed release setting on the fact-checker machine!” He wrote.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton also had a few choice words for Scopes, calling the fact-checker “corrupt.”
“@JoeBiden owes millions of Americans an apology for purposely misleading them, but there won’t be one because certain folks lack a conscience,” wrote Salty Texan.
“A left wing lie doesn’t care who tells it!” Wrote former Rep. Vernon Jones (R-GA).
After years of accusing Trump of being a bigot and a fan of neo-Nazis, the left can no longer use this incident as an attack on his character.
While many on social media commented that the correction was better late than never, it is hard to tell if Trump opponents will agree with the decision, or continue to proclaim that his Charlottesville press conference was about spewing hate.
