The former president’s big tent snagged a union first ahead of the convention. eroding blue strongholds with blue-collar voters.
Throughout the 2024 election cycle, former President Donald Trump has bucked expectations as polling numbers have continued to show an exodus from President Joe Biden and the left’s detrimental policies for average American citizens. While Democrats continued to rely on celebrities and elites to pad campaign coffers, the GOP promised an appeal to the Teamsters union with a convention guest spot from their president.
On Truth Social Friday, Trump divulged the appearance at the Republican National Convention in July by stating, “Sean O’Brien, the General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, has accepted my invitation to speak at the RNC Convention in Milwaukee. Our GREAT convention will unify Americans and demonstrate to the nation’s working families they come first.”
“When I am back in the White House,” he continued, “the hardworking Teamsters, and all working Americans, will once again have a country they can afford to live in and be respected around the world. Sean, I look forward to seeing you represent the Teamsters in Milwaukee. Together we can Make America Great Again.”
It was previously reported that, in February, the Teamsters had handed over their first donation to the RNC since 2004 weeks after Trump had met with O’Brien. The union president was also said to have requested the opportunity to speak at both the Republican and Democratic conventions.
Teamsters spokesperson Kara Deniz confirmed as much to The Associated Press Friday as O’Brien’s appearance would mark the first time that a Teamsters president had ever spoken before those gathered at the GOP convention.
Amid the party’s growing favor with Hispanic and black voters, Axios had also indicated, “Democratic lawmakers in battleground states are worried that their long-running support from union voters may be the latest casualty of a political realignment that’s threatening President Biden’s re-election.”

Meanwhile, representatives for the Democratic National Convention were unprepared to divulge their final plans regarding the August convention in Chicago and Democratic Party spokesperson Matt Hill informed the AP, “We are building a convention in Chicago that will tell our story to the American people, including the stories of labor and union leaders and workers that President Biden has been delivering for as the most pro-union president in modern history.”
The impact of shifting the margin of union voters by even a small amount would be considerable as AP VoteCast figures accounted for 56% of members and households casting their ballots for Biden during the 2020 contest.
“Biden — who has long billed himself as the most labor-friendly president in history, going so far as to turn up on a picket line in the Detroit area during the autoworkers strike last fall — has already received significant organized labor backing with early endorsements from the AFL-CIO and others,” detailed the AP. “But Trump is hoping to cut into that support as he casts himself as pro-worker and tries to exacerbate divisions between union leaders and some rank-and-file members.”
Included among the roughly 1.3 million members of the Teamsters were entertainment industry workers and government employees, as well as a community with considerable favor for Trump — law enforcement.
