Tesla and X owner Elon Musk has been labeled as a conspiracy theorist among the left, but this time, one of his theories proved to be accurate regarding illegal immigrants having access to vote in elections.
In 49 states, illegal immigrants can obtain voter registration forms, without needing to provide the necessary paperwork to prove their citizenship, the New York Post reported.
To combat any chances of illegal immigrants voting, the House Administration Committee approved the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act in May, which would make it mandatory for all states to collect proof of citizenship when individuals attempt to vote by mail, through the DMV, or any welfare office.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who introduced the act, told the Post that Republicans had to fight to ensure election integrity.
“While Biden and radical progressive Democrats give ISIS and criminals an app to literally schedule their illegal entry, Republicans must fight any chance of illegal voter registration until we can mass deport,” he said.
While the SAVE Act seems fair, the Campaign Legal Center, a liberal organization, opposed it, calling the act “shameful,” stating that it would “undermine trust in the electoral process.” The center also implied that illegal immigrants posed no threat to election integrity.
Many liberals have mocked the idea that illegal immigrants were voting in elections, stating that it was illegal to do so. However, it is also against the law to enter the country illegally, proving that there is a possibility that these individuals are participating in elections.
While the idea seems far-fetched to the left, Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, stated otherwise, agreeing with Musk.
“I think it’s absolutely a possibility because if you aren’t requiring proof of citizenship, you’re simply going on people’s word that oh yeah I’m a U.S. citizen, you’re going to get aliens who register and who vote,” he told the Daily Caller back in February.
“The Justice Department, they don’t prosecute these cases, even though it’s a felony under federal law for an alien to register and vote,” he continued. “Aliens have an incentive, a voter registration card, which you get when you register, that’s a gateway for getting other kinds of ID.”
Musk also noted that it was “strange” for Arizona to not require proof of citizenship for federal elections.
In states like Arizona, enforcing voter integrity could prove to be challenging, due to the state’s Election Procedures Manual. The manual, which was created by Adrian Fontes, the Democratic Arizona Secretary of State, allows individuals who cannot verify their citizenship to register as “federal-only” voters, enabling them to cast their ballots in upcoming elections, the Daily Caller reported.
Illegal immigrants being allowed to vote is also an issue in Georgia. Left-wing groups, such as the New Georgia Project and the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda, want to do away with the state’s citizenship-verification process.
In 2018 during her run for governor, former Rep. Stacy Abrams (D-GA) stated that she would win on a “blue wave” that “is undocumented,” a statement that makes it sound like giving illegal immigrants the right to vote would ensure victory to Democratic candidates.
Though the measure was approved and appears to be a victory, it still will have to pass the Senate, which is Democratic-led.
