On Saturday, the New York Post revealed the identity of an 86-year-old man who was brutally decapitated by a truck that struck him at a Brooklyn crosswalk, as none other than a former acting captain for the Genovese crime family.
Anthony Conigliaro was struck and killed on June 12th in an accidental hit by a city Department of Transportation truck, according to law enforcement sources.
Conigliaro was once a member of the mafia, and went under the names of “Tony Cakes,” “Tony the Dessert Man,” among other dessert-themed aliases due to his work amongst the city’s dessert scene.
The Post reported that he had worked for years in the wholesale cake business, “selling sweets across the New York City area and running an Italian ice and gelato stand in Little Italy.”
“He spent his life looking over his shoulder but he forgot to look both ways before crossing the street,” one police source told the Post.
Surveillance footage of the incident showed Conigliaro enter the crosswalk at nearly the same time the DOT truck entered it. The truck could be seen crashing into Conigliaro before he fell down out of view.
It is believed that the vehicle dragged his body several yards and, at some point, his head became detached from the rest of his corpse.
The driver of the vehicle was seen in other footage appearing devastated at the accident. However, no charges have been filed against him, and Conigliaro was walking against the traffic light at the time of the accident.
This particular intersection was reportedly known to local residents as a dangerous one when crossing. Bay Ridge resident Samia Haq told Brooklyn News 12 last week that the walk sign was especially dangerous.
“It turns on but by the time you’re in the middle of the road, then it’s gone. Somebody who is disabled or somebody who cannot walk fast — it’s really really dangerous for them.”

Conigliaro had not only been connected to the Mafia but had a nearly two-decade-old racketeering case to his name. In 2005, he was accused of being a loan shark for the Genovese by federal prosecutors. He was also arrested in 1999 for criminal usury and in 2006 in a grand larceny case.
Court records indicate that Conigliaro had accepted a guilty plea to a racketeering conspiracy charge and received a 13-month sentence. It is unclear if he continued his association with the Mafia after that point.
Matthew Mari, a mob lawyer and friend to Conigliaro, said that he had fully immersed himself in the dessert scene after spending time in prison.
“Later on in life he became known as Tony the Dessert Man,” Mari said. “He was a kind gentle soft spoken very quiet guy. Always trying to help people.”
The former mafioso was also a father of two, but the Post was unable to reach his family members.
Conigliaro had reportedly lived a quiet life alone in his small apartment in Bay Ridge. A neighbor told the outlet that he had always looked out for others, but was unaware of his past connections.
“We miss him. Everybody misses him,” the neighbor said.
No arrests have been made in the case, but the NYPD told the Post that the investigation is ongoing.
