A woman in Scottsdale, Arizona dealt with an absolutely horrifying and life-changing experience after her Tesla was rendered non-functional due to a battery failure.
Renee Sanchez indicated that she may no longer be a fan of Tesla after she put her 20-month-old granddaughter in the car seat in preparation for an excursion at the Phoenix Zoo.
“And I closed the door, went around the car, get in the front seat, and my car was dead,” she explained, according to KPHO-TV. “I could not get in. My phone key wouldn’t open it. My card key wouldn’t open it.”
Sanchez called 911 to seek help for her toddler, prompting Scottsdale firefighters to respond to the scene.
“And when they got here, the first thing they said was, ‘Uggh, it’s a Tesla. We can’t get in these cars,’” she said of the firefighters. “And I said, ‘I don’t care if you have to cut my car in half. Just get her out.’”
As Sanchez’s granddaughter sat in the baking vehicle, firefighters moved to smash the window with an ax.
“She was OK for the first few minutes,” Sanchez said. “But as soon as the firemen came and all the commotion started and the windows getting broken into, she started crying because she was scared.”
After the young girl was at least freed and saved, Sanchez reflected on how infuriated she was over the incident.
“Then, all the thoughts of, oh my God, this could have been so much worse,” she said.
The car’s battery had reportedly died without any sort of warning. Teslas are typically supposed to deliver multiple warnings before this occurs, but this apparently did not happen, according to both Sanchez as well as a Tesla service department.
“When that battery goes, you’re dead in the water,” she said.
On Your Side reported that there is a method Tesla drivers can employ to open up a car that has died, but that it is a complicated set of time-consuming steps that necessitates the use of wires and battery chargers. Furthermore, it is clear that numerous Tesla owners and first responders are not aware of the topic.
“They need to educate the first responders because they had no idea,” stated Sanchez. “They were as much in the dark as I was.”
Sanchez emphasized that her faith in Tesla has slipped.
“I give Tesla props. When it works, it’s great. But when it doesn’t, it can be deadly.”
