On Saturday, one man was arrested after randomly slashing three men at a Long Island City subway station, leaving them with “big cuts” on their faces, as New York continues to experience an increase in criminal activity.
The New York Post cited authorities, who reported that at around 8:20 a.m., the suspect attacked a random traveler on a northbound E train on the left side of his face. Before he could be apprehended, he got off at Queens Plaza E/M/R and attacked two more victims, aged 23 and 32, near the station at 43rd Avenue and 27th Street.
“You could see the meat in their faces. [The slashings] were quite deep,” said John Lee, a resident of Long Island City, who said he saw the victims inside the subway station talking to police after the attacks.
A police source said that the victims “didn’t know” the attacker, or each other. They were taken to several nearby hospitals and are in stable condition. The attacker, meanwhile, was arrested and taken to Elmhurst Hospital. It is unknown if he was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation or because he was injured in some way.
No charges have yet been filed.
Arturo Asmal, 28, a resident who lives just a few blocks from the station, told the outlet, “We have a big problem with crime. Frequent fights at the train stations. Armed robberies. Theft.”
Another resident, a 55-year-old woman who identified herself as Judy, said she avoided the subway due to the increase in crime, saying she was “scared of all the violence on the trains.”
This is indicative of a larger problem of criminal activity that has worried residents of the city for several years. The Post previously reported that overall crime was on the increase in 2023, which was primarily driven by a massive surge in assaults. The Post reported that instances of assault had “neared 28,000 for the first time in the city’s publicly recorded history,” that year, citing a rolling report from the NYPD.
Democratic City Councilman Bob Holden told the outlet that the “reported stats” are “barely scratching the surface.”
“All I ever hear from storekeepers and constituents is that they stopped reporting crimes, because of the revolving-door criminal injustice system,” he said. “It’s a fact every New Yorker lives with daily.”
Mayor Eric Adams, meanwhile, has refused to acknowledge that there is a crime problem within his fine city, insisting that the city is safer now than it was at the beginning of his term.
“Mayor Adams has been clear that public safety is the key to prosperity, and in a little more than two years in office, our administration has been successful in driving down major crimes like shootings, murders, burglaries, grand larcenies, and more,” Adams spokesperson Kayla Mamelak said, per the Post.
“While reclassifications of some crimes happen every year, and there is undoubtedly more work to be done to keep New Yorkers safe, there is no disputing that our streets are safer today than they were before Mayor Adams took office.”
“It’s pretty crazy to see something like that happen at our station… I’m definitely more worried now,” Lee told The Post. “I’m definitely more worried now, taking the subway. But it is the only transportation option we have.”
