The musician Ray Lin Howard, also known as Fat Trophy Wife, posted a video to the Chinese-made site that has received over a million views.
In the popular TikTok video, she immediately called Alaska Airlines out for what happened to her on the flight. Howard described how she got into an issue with the law when the flight crew on an Alaska Airlines flight did not like her clothing.
In the description of her widely shared video, Howard described how an Alaska Airlines flight attendant had “harassed” her and reported her to the airport police for wearing an “inappropriate outfit” while flying. She claimed that she was kicked out because her stomach was showing while being seated and for being “fat, tattooed, and mixed-race”.
Howard was boarding the flight wearing biker shorts and a crop top when the flight attendant allegedly harassed her for her attire. Following the “harassment” Airport officers were escorting her through the airport as she recorded. She shared, “I was harassed about my outfit — I put my shirt back on. They asked me to put my shirt back on. [So] I put my shirt back on, and then, they approached me again, saying that I can’t wear this, my stomach is showing — and it’s inappropriate.”
Even though she was asked to cover herself and put on a shirt, it wasn’t enough. The TikToker also revealed that she was wearing a sports bra underneath, but staff members found her again when they came over to her for the third time to complain, and Ray added, “If you’re going to kick me off, kick me off. I’ve done what you asked me to do. I want you to leave me alone.”
The musician begged the authorities to let her leave since she had to play a gig. However, Ray was not permitted to re-board the aircraft. The police could not do anything to Howard over her “inappropriate” outfit, stating that Alaska Airlines has its own dress code.
However, Howard said in her TikTok post that she felt she was being discriminated against for being a fat, tattooed, and mixed-race woman. The TikToker added that it left her feeling “anger, disappointment, helplessness, humiliation and confusion”.
The Alaska Airlines’ official website specifies “casual” as the acceptable dress code:
“The dress code on both Alaska and Horizon is casual, and the requirement is simply a neat and well-groomed appearance. Clothing that is soiled or tattered and bare feet are never acceptable. You are expected to use good judgment, but customer service agents will have the final authority to refuse travel for inappropriate attire or appearance.”
In a subsequent TikTok, Howard said, “Throughout my life as a large person, I’ve had to deal with fatphobia, especially growing up in the Midwest — but not to this degree.” Alaska Airlines, on the other hand, have said that they are in contact with Howard and are committed to figuring out what transpired.
“We’re in contact with the guest. We’re committed to finding out what happened and taking the appropriate actions. It’s our goal to provide caring service to all of our guests. When we don’t live up to that goal, we do everything we can to make it right,” an Alaska Airlines representative said in a statement.
