A drunk driver slammed his SUV into a group of cyclists near the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas – and all of it was caught on camera.
Knewz.com has learned that the intoxicated man has since been taken into custody.
The entire incident was captured by a camera installed at the back of one of the cyclists’ bikes.
The video footage begins with the group of cyclists riding their bikes down the right-hand lane of what the local news outlet WFAA said was North Airfield Drive.
A white Subaru SUV suddenly sped up behind the cyclists and rammed them at full speed, causing both of them to fall. While he appeared to slow down for a brief moment, he proceeded to run over one of the fallen cyclists and make a quick getaway.
However, the new outlet reported that witnesses were able to chase the man down and catch him, and the Dallas Fort Worth airport police took him into custody.

The man was identified as 31-year-old Benjamin Hylander in the court documents, per WFAA. The victims are a man and a woman, both in their 60s.
The outlet noted that neither of them suffered serious injuries.
A breathalyzer test done after the incident showed that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.25, which is a level where many people lose consciousness according to the Alcohol Rehab Guide. Hylander told the police that he had two to three large beers.
“The more alcohol consumed, the less rational the thought process, leading many to continue drinking when they have really had enough. These lowered inhibitions are what often cause people to get behind the wheel of a car with confidence after drinking, putting themselves and others at risk,” the Alcohol Rehab Guide notes.

Police records cited by WFAA say that once he was caught, he tried to run up to the cyclists he hit while they were being treated by emergency medical services and told the arresting officers that he was “sorry” and wanted to “talk to the individual he hit.”
Hylander has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Attorney Bill Shirer said in a statement to WFAA that although he has seen cases like this one before, he has never encountered one so “egregious,” and added that it was fortunate that the camera installed at the back of the bike caught the incident.

“There’s a lot of cyclists using these rearview cameras. And they’ve been very, very helpful. I mean, I’ve had many cases where these cameras have just really shown what goes on. It’s really remarkable how bad some motorists are,” he told the outlet.
“[The cyclists] were doing everything they should have. It was during the day they were in a group. There was no excuse for this guy [Hylander] not to see him,” he added.
Chris Swanzy, the owner of PlayTri bike shop in Las Colinas, Texas, told the outlet that the incident has rattled the North Texas cycling community.
“I ride that same airport loop all the time. I’m seeing that I was very familiar with exactly where they were at and some of the dangers that come with riding on the road,” said Swanzy.
