What our generation calls the “culture,” Scripture and Jesus called “the world” – a system of values and social norms that are institutionalized into a society which coordinates them into a rebellion against God by redefining what constitutes morality and immorality. To encourage us to not let the culture/world manipulate us to turn away from Him, Christ made the following statement about experiencing animosity from secular society:
If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you (John 15:18-19).
The world tells us that our opinions must conform to the secular values of the age – and if they don’t, then we are labeled as judgmental, close-minded extremists who should be shunned, silenced, or “canceled.” Authentic Catholics are assailed by the world because modern culture was formed and is constantly molded by sexual degenerates, immoral politicians, godless celebrities, propagandist media, and Marxist educational institutions – all who hate us. This hatred toward us is amplified during this month of June when the so-called *LGBTQIA2S+ movement loathes anyone who refuses to bow to their idols and false gods of same-sex lust, hedonism, infatuation with one’s body, vainglory, and carnality.
*Note: LGBTQIA2S+ is the latest politically correct acronym used by the culture to describe people who don’t follow the original manner of sexuality as intended by God and who want to be categorized according to their sexual appetites. The only reason I use this elongated, seemingly infinite, reprobate term is purely to magnify its ridiculousness, similar to how absurd it is that what seems like every month a new flag is designed for the latest sexually debased behavior.
During this so-called “pride month,” the spirit of the age wants us to succumb to their anti-God propaganda. Unfortunately, there are plenty of counterfeit Catholics who willingly submit to the culture’s pressure by displaying their hijacked rainbow symbol and agreeing with the false mantra that “love is love.” There are also lukewarm Catholics who believe the most Christian thing to do is to not hurt anyone’s feelings so they will lay low and not say anything that rebuts sexual immorality. Whether taking the counterfeit or lukewarm path of either accepting or deferring to the secular culture’s “truth,” one is separating oneself from God; the former course does so immediately and the latter course does so eventually by a slow drip-drip-drip.
Our Lord expects us to act as authentic Catholics who refuse to join the corrupt culture or bury our heads in the sand, but instead will firmly and unashamedly resist the opposition’s manufactured outrage that Biblical beliefs about sexual morality are so-called “hate-speech” and “homophobic.” These invented labels will be screamed at us not only by sexual degenerates, immoral politicians, godless celebrities, propagandist media, and Marxist educational institutions, but, sadly, by a next door neighbor, a fellow school parent, and/or a few of our relatives. With the thick skin that is required in these instances, we must calmly tell the opposition that we will never accept their lies and never stop telling the truths that we know are correct – and that society also deemed correct for thousands of years up until just the most current century. These truths include:
- there are no such things as “gay marriage” or “transgenderism”;
- there are only two sexes and sex/gender is not “assigned at birth”;
- human sexuality is a beautiful gift from God that He planned to be used solely by a man and woman married to each other and open to reproduction.
Their side shoves their beliefs in people’s faces throughout the month of June by riding naked on bikes or playing out their BDSM fetishes by acting as leashed animals in front of children. Contrastingly, our side displays compassion because we know most “gay pride” promoters are either ignorant, or mentally ill, or weak as sheep, not strong enough to think for themselves and keep from getting corralled into the world. But compassion does not mean capitulating to their delusional thoughts or ignoring their fictional misrepresentations. Capitulating or ignoring would be misplaced compassion, not true compassion. True compassion toward those engaging in sexually disordered acts and toward their supporters who endorse this immorality is to pray for their conversion, inform them of the truth about this sinful lifestyle, and encourage them to step off the wide path that leads to darkness and follow the narrow path which leads to the light of Christ.
An adult Catholic who chooses to not cave to worldly temptations and who resists peer pressure to agree with the popular culture’s corruption is protecting one’s soul. But that’s not enough. Even more vital, as a role model to his or her children, the adult cannot allow them to get sucked into living this sinful lifestyle or into lauding others who are active homosexuals.
It is difficult for a parent to fight against the cultural indoctrination that has probably already started taking over their kids’ minds and made their youngsters conclude how less stressful it is to go along to get along with the world. Parents must assure their children that although they will initially be persecuted for living their lives counter-culturally as their faith expects and not as the world wants them to, the presence of Our Lord will bring them encouragement and comfort. Mom and Dad might want to say something like this to their sons and daughters:
What the world offers is empty and hollow. You will not find fulfillment in following the spirit of the age but in following the teachings of Jesus Christ. If you really want to be fulfilled – not just in the coming years but in the after-life – you need to submit yourself to His Truths, which are everlasting and good, and not submit to the lies and depravity of the pagan-like culture.
Taking a counter-cultural stand is challenging enough for adults but is extremely challenging for children because of peer pressure, their desire to fit in, and the blitzkrieg the culture wages via the media and celebrity influence. As authentic Catholic adults, we have to work hard to help our young ones show fortitude when popular society labels as strange at best and hateful at worst our actions of not celebrating so-called pride month, refusing to attend a so-called gay wedding, and not going along with using one’s so-called preferred pronouns.
Some parents have found that these Scripture passages can serve as discussion-starters during family talks about the dangers of being drawn into the world and the error of believing that happiness is found in things such as satisfying our sexual desires:
In addition, parents can discuss how in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 4:1-20) Jesus is saying that the lures of the world are tempting, but we must resist the urge to pursue worldly living that will choke the word of God within us. Moreover, Jesus is clarifying in this parable that if left unchecked our human passions can carry us away with the wind and that we must live a life focusing on prayer and the Sacraments lest we will not be able to defeat the evil one’s temptations.
As we faithful Catholics fight through the barrage of vileness coming from the culture, especially this month, we would do well to keep reminding ourselves that life is short and this world is passing away. We must keep our minds on valuing the things of Heaven more than the things of this world.
We should be concerned if we do not experience any form of adversity or animosity from society in June – and in the other 11 months – because that means we are not living counter-culturally. If and when we do experience hatred by the world, find solace in realizing this makes us more like Christ Himself, who prepared us for this and offers us His strength to courageously endure it with joy:
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:10-12).
In the end, all that matters is what our Lord thinks – and nothing else.
