Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina has pointed to media disinformation as the cause of President Joe Biden’s declining support from Black voters.
During an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Clyburn criticized the media for not accurately reporting Biden’s achievements, which he believes has led to lower poll numbers.
A May poll by The New York Times showed Biden’s support among Black voters at 70%, down from 87% in the 2020 election per CNN’s exit poll.
Clyburn urged voters to focus on Biden’s record rather than media coverage. “I ask voters to compare their records,” he said, quoting his father’s teachings that actions are more important than words.
Clyburn contrasted Biden’s healthcare achievements with former President Donald Trump’s attempts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “Do you think you’re better off without the Affordable Care Act?” Clyburn asked, questioning Trump’s impact on African Americans.
Trump’s administration did enact policies such as the First Step Act, commuting Alice Johnson’s sentence, and securing funding for historically Black colleges and universities. However, Clyburn argued that these actions lack substantive benefits compared to Biden’s policies.
Former NAACP President Cornell William Brooks defended Biden on CNN, stating that most Black voters still back him despite Trump’s poll numbers.
Biden’s narrow 2020 victories in key states highlight the critical role of Black voter support.
Clyburn warned about the influence of media disinformation. “We have to be very careful, because this is all about miscommunication, disinformation,” he stated, emphasizing the media’s power to shape public opinion. He cautioned that misleading narratives could suppress voter turnout.
To combat these issues, Clyburn is actively campaigning to highlight Biden’s accomplishments and counteract disinformation. “I’m going to Georgia this weekend to spend two days down there, reminding people of what this man did for the four years that he was in office,” he announced.
