Van Jones, a former advisor to former President Obama, believes that President Joe Biden may have his entire presidency riding on his debate with former President Donald Trump.
Jones said that Republicans have made a mistake in talking about the president’s apparent mental decline because it has lowered the bar for him during an interview on CNN with host Jim Acosta.
But, Jones added, if the president does not meet that lower bar, it could be the end of him.
“They keep acting like he’s going to walk out there and fall asleep or fall over,” Jones said. “But if he goes in there and he can handle himself against Donald Trump… then this guy deserves another shot to be president — because that is tough.”
“Biden’s got two things working against him. One is, the momentum is not there with him, but also he’s got a full-time job. All Trump’s got to do is sit up in court, not fall asleep, and then go out there and say mean stuff about Biden,” Jones continued.
He then characterized the debate as “the whole presidency in a bottle.”
“This is the entire election, as far as I’m concerned. The entire world will be watching,” he said. “If you are a carbon-based life form, you’re going to be watching. If you have a functioning brain stem, you’re going to be watching. Because if Biden goes out there and messes up, it’s game over.”
The anchor asked him how important the debate was for the president and he did not mince words.
“This is the entire election, as far as I’m concerned. The entire world will be watching. If you are a carbon-based life form, you’re going to be watching. If you have got a functioning brain stem, you’re going to be watching because if Biden goes out there and messes up, it’s game over. If he walks out there and a week later he’s lower in the polls, it’s panic in the party,” he said.
