The internet erupted in fury over the Associated Press’ choiceful use of the word “men” instead of “illegal immigrants” to describe the two suspected killers of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray.
AP’s reporting was used by thousands of local outlets, begging the question: how will the outlet’s omission change public reaction?
“Why didn’t you bother mentioning that the men are 2 illegal aliens from Venezuela who took this 12-year-old girls life in Houston?” quipped one user on X.
Resist the Mainstream reported Friday on the two illegal immigrant suspects; Johan Jose Rangel Martinez, 21, and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26.
The story garnered attention because the pair, each charged with capital murder, were recently caught by Border Patrol.
Sources with the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Fox News that Pena Ramos crossed illegally into El Paso, Texas, back in May.
He was apprehended by Border Patrol, only to later be released into the US with a Notice to Appear in court.
Rangel Martinez was also caught by Border Patrol entering the US illegally, but was eventually released under undisclosed circumstances.
Fox made sure to call the two suspects “illegal immigrants,” despite the AP omitting that key detail from its reporting.
Fox’s Bill Melugin called this out on X, writing, “Not only does AP not mention that both suspects are illegal aliens who were both recently caught & released at border, they don’t even mention that they are from Venezuela, which police publicly disclosed.”
“Media across the country will use AP wires/reporting on this,” he continued.
Daily Wire’s Megan Basham said, “It is bad enough the AP does not mention in the headline that both these men were here illegally. But to omit that information in the body of the story is a level of journalistic malpractice I could not have imagined.”
“They don’t even feel they have to pretend to provide relevant reporting anymore. And that’s frankly chilling.”
Other X users saw this choiceful language by the AP as a prime example of the mainstream media’s dishonest reporting.
One account posted, “Just when you thought you hated the @AP enough, they have the nerve to post an dishonest line like this.”
Another said, “They don’t even mention that they were illegals in the headline. No matter how bad you hate the media/press… IT IS NOT ENOUGH.”
Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos were captured in video images starting their evening at a restaurant Sunday night.
They eventually met with Nungaray, then the three traveled to a 7-Eleven, per Fox.
All were later depicted walking to the bridge where investigators believe the pre-teen was murdered.
The two illegal immigrants reappeared at their apartment complex without Nungaray later that night.
“It’s just an overwhelming sense of relief to know they’re just not out there,” Nungaray’s mother said after Rangel Martinez and Pena Ramos were arrested.
Mayor Whitmire has stressed the importance of a swift trial, stating, “We’re going to be watching you; the arrests have taken place, and the charges have been filed.”
“Now, we want the justice system to do its job. If there was ever a circumstance where you do not give someone bail, this is it.”
