Billions of people across the globe use social media every day to communicate with coworkers, clients, and loved ones.
Many of these social media consumers use popular social media platforms without giving much thought to who can see their posts.
And this state agency joins Truth Social over this significant concern.
The Oklahoma Department of Education just made this brave move
Many government entities rely on social media to communicate with constituents, informing them of new programs and any disruptions to their public services.
For example, many kids these days find out about snow-related school closures from their X accounts, rather than waiting for their school district to pop up on the radio or the weather channel.
Although social media can serve as a very helpful tool, significant concerns have arisen regarding America’s top social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
Critics of Big Tech platforms such as Facebook claim that these platforms have worked with the federal government to censor certain individuals and opinions online.
The ongoing Murthy v Missouri Supreme Court case has brought this issue to the forefront, a case that could determine the legality of these alleged censorship schemes.
In the meantime, many Americans fear the immense power of large social media platforms.
New social media platforms have since arisen, including Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform, which promises to create an environment that fosters free speech.
Earlier this week, the Oklahoma Department of Education announced that the department would join Truth Social, citing concerns over censorship.
Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters explained this major development in a press release earlier this week.
Walters claimed that this move allows his department to communicate more freely, telling the press, “We’re gonna make sure we can speak directly to parents so we’re happy to partner with Truth Social to get our message out directly without big tech censorship.”
He then described his negative experiences with other Big Tech platforms, adding that, “Facebook has multiple times taken down my videos and given us these community warnings or whatever else.”
“We’ve continued to see it happen to national figures; we saw President Trump banned completely. We never want to be in that position again where we can’t speak directly to the people of Oklahoma,” the Oklahoma official claimed.
Walters’ switch to Truth Social could initiate a social media revolt
Although more people sign up for Truth Social every day, many public entities have yet to join this growing platform.
Ryan Walters’ move could help to encourage other public officials across the nation to do so.
As Walters described in his press release, Truth Social allows him to more adequately communicate with parents, without the fear of his posts being taken down for nefarious reasons.
The more Big Tech interferes in public processes, the more people will consider leaving platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
