During a Q&A at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, Elon Musk revealed that there have been two attempts to assassinate him in the past few months.
Musk was asked by an attendee to reassure the shareholders that he was “doing everything to take care of yourself,” in the context of being so high profile, to which he responded “It is getting a little crazy these days… I will endeavour to stay alive.”
He expanded, “You know, like, to first approximation, the probability that a homicidal maniac will try to kill you is proportional to how many homicidal maniacs hear your name. They hear my name a lot, and I’m like, OK, I’m on the list.”
“We [Tesla] actually did have two homicidal maniacs in the last roughly seven months, come to aspirationally try to kill me and a bunch of other people,” Musk revealed.
“It’s not just me, and there wasn’t an actual issue that they articulated, they were just, you know, in the homicidal maniac career,” Musk added.
He noted that even someone like John Lennon, who was singing about peace and love was a target for homicidal maniacs.
Musk added that the main reason it is an issue is that it makes him more “stand offish.”
Meanwhile, Musk has repeated a warning against the march of AI, noting that he sees a “10-20 percent probability” of a scenario in which it will annihilate humanity.
Despite this, Musk quipped “The glass is 80% full. Look on the bright side.”
Speaking at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, Musk warned that even AI’s most positive outcomes will create an ‘existential crisis’ for humanity.
