CV NEWS FEED // The Society of Catholic Scientists had its seventh-annual conference this month in Illinois, where presenters shared about their respective fields through a Catholic lens, according to news outlet Chicago Catholic.
“People rarely hear from scientists who are believers,” Society president Stephen Barr told Chicago Catholic. “We want to witness to the scientific community and to the world at large that there are many scientists who are believers.”
Over 100 people attended the conference, which was held from June 7-9 at the University of St. Mary of the Lake and Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois.
Speakers from various scientific fields gave presentations on topics such as artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial life. Another professor whose fields are biology and math, Martin Nowak, gave a presentation on evolution.
A biologist and professor from the University of California-Irvine, Suzanne Bohlson, gave a presentation sharing her story of converting to Catholicism as an adult. She noted that it was especially helpful to learn about the conversion stories of Catholic scientists and philosophers, such as 15th-century mathematician Blaise Pascal.
Barr and several others founded the Society of Catholic Scientists in 2016. According to Chicago Catholic, Barr explained that the Society is meant “to help Catholic scientists understand that they were not alone, and to show others that science and faith are not incompatible.”
Barr told Chicago Catholic that “to scientists who are believers, what they learn about the universe also teaches about God.”
“The great Johannes Kepler, one of the founders of science and a devout Christian wrote, ‘I thank you Lord God our Creator, that you have allowed me to see the beauty in your work of Creation.’ That is also the attitude of [the Society of Catholic Scientists],” he said.
