Texas officials reported a dramatic decrease in illegal border crossings since Gov. Greg Abbott launched his state-level border security mission called Operation Lone Star.
The Republican governor has deployed floating border barriers, installed wire fencing and utilized the Texas National Guard to curb the flow of illegal immigrants as part of this initiative.
Operation Lone Star has led to a 74 percent reduction in illegal immigration since the initiative began back in March 2021, a June 14 statement from Abbott’s office revealed.
The multi-agency effort has resulted in nearly 514,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and over 44,000 criminal arrests, including more than 38,600 felony charges
Law enforcement officials have also seized over 489 million lethal doses of synthetic opioid fentanyl during this period.
The statement from Abbott’s office highlighted that this quantity is enough to “kill every man, woman, and child in the United States and Mexico combined.”
It asserted that without the state’s border security program, the apprehended or arrested individuals, along with “every ounce of drugs” seized, could have infiltrated communities across Texas and other U.S. states.
The governor also criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the border situation in his statement; an on-going outcry that Abbott has arguably championed throughout the president’s term.
He recently claimed that the new border executive order signed by Biden earlier this month “will do little to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the country.”
Abbott cited a recent Fox News interview in his statement: “As long as the Biden Administration refuses to provide any type of enforcement, any type of blockage, of people crossing illegally, all that this new Biden policy is going to do is to actually attract and invite even more people to cross the border illegally.”
He further argued the executive actions are, instead, “accelerating” the number of illegal immigrant crossings.
The executive order from Biden suspends asylum requests at certain times to deter illegal border crossings, Resist the Mainstream previously reported.
A White House fact sheet published on June 4 states that the proclamation bars illegal immigrants from receiving asylum when border officials deem illegal crossings are at “high levels,” noting this “is the case today.”
Biden announced at a White House news conference the same day that the “ban will remain in place until the number of people trying to enter illegally is reduced to a level that our system can effectively manage.”
The proclamation will take effect once the average number of illegal immigrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border exceeds 2,500 per day over seven days.
It comes amid a historic increase in illegal immigrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border.
ZeroHedge reported that data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show that the total number of border encounters in the first five months of fiscal year 2024 exceeded 1.15 million.
The outlet added that this figure is up nearly 12 percent from the 1.03 million in the same period in fiscal 2023.
