The Ukrainian Air Force carried out significant attacks on Russian infantry positions using precision-guided smart bombs supplied by the Western Allies.
Knewz.com has learned that the attacks thwarted the attempts made by Russian forces to capture the northern town of Vovchansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast.
The latest attacks are a deviation from the usual behavior of the Ukrainian Air Force, which used to avoid fighting on the frontline.
With this shift in tactic, Ukraine stands to challenge the air superiority Russia has been able to maintain in the Ukraine war.
Strike aircraft from the Ukrainian Air Force reportedly dropped “at least” eight laser or GPS-guided smart bombs on Russian military positions on the property of the Vovchansk Aggregate Factory over two separate attacks, per Kyiv Post.
The outlet wrote that many milbloggers who reported the attack identified the bombs as the GBU-39B, a small glide bomb from the house of the American aerospace company Boeing, with the capacity to fly up to 69 miles and detonate within 3 feet of its target.
On the other hand, many other reports wrote that the bombs used in the attack were the French-made ASSM HAMMER, which is similar to the GBU-39B glide bombs, while some others identified the munitions as JDAM.
The JDAM, or Joint Direct Attack Munition, is a “guidance tail kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurate, adverse weather “smart” munitions,” according to the United States Air Force.
“With the addition of a new tail section that contains an inertial navigational system and a global positioning system guidance control unit, JDAM improves the accuracy of unguided, general purpose bombs in any weather condition.”
The “Murchiki” strike drone group of the 57th Motorized Infantry Brigade of Ukraine recorded the glide bomb strike on the Vovchansk Aggregate Factory from an observation aircraft and reported, per Kyiv Post, that Russian forces in the area were effectively cut off. It further that they are currently hiding in buildings in the southwestern corner of the factory.
The outlet wrote that Russian sources have also confirmed the use of smart bombs in the attack, although they have maintained their silence regarding the Ukrainian claims of having trapped Russian forces in numbers between a dozen to a few hundred.
The pro-Ukraine military information Telegram channel DeepState wrote that soldiers from the Russian reconnaissance group DRG started attacking the factory in Kharkiv around mid-May 2024 and that Ukrainian forces managed to cut them off on June 1, after a partial encirclement.
The Telegram channel also wrote that the armed forces of Ukraine focused heavy fire on the Russian supply lines to the factory in Vovchansk using machine guns, artillery, and drones.
A June 17 report from the Austro-U.S. military analytical team Tom Cooper and Donald Hill cited by Kyiv Post also mentioned that Russian soldiers are trapped in the factory, although it estimates that they are around 200 to 400 in strength.
“The most severe fighting is in Vovchansk. After one Russian attack, a Ukrainian counterattack went better than expected, pushing back the Russians a couple blocks and isolating pockets of Russian troops in larger buildings, two of which were bombed by the Ukrainian air force,” the report read, via Kyiv Post.
