An abundance of well-known celebrity scientists these days are proclaiming that there is no God, because God can’t be proven by the scientific method. This pronouncement is so funny, because you cannot put God under a microscope and then say “There He is!” Why? Because the scientific method is only good for physical, electrical, and atomic matter and processes that exist in nature, time, and space. God exists outside of time and space and is a pure spirit, so the scientific method of trying to find him is a little bit like using a ruler to measure the popularity of a rock star – the answer can’t be found that way. Since God invented science, problems with the mixing of faith and reason do not exist. Just ask St. John Paul II!
But God can be found in other ways besides the scientific method. Scientists who are also atheists should take note of how a detective works to find a criminal. A detective doesn’t have to witness the crook at the scene of the crime to know that he is guilty. Rather, he can use eyewitness accounts, DNA, fingerprints, bite marks, blood samples, and so on that are found at the scene of the crime. From this evidence, he can usually deduce that a certain person was present, and, once the motive is established, that he committed the crime. Accordingly, the celebrity atheist scientist could certainly take a look at the abundance of Near Death Experiences, the Shroud of Turin, bloody Eucharist hosts, and the Guadalupe Tilma. All of these supernatural items have been examined by numerous scientists from around the world, who have concluded that only a miracle from God could have caused them. But sadly, most scientists who are atheists will not take the time to do this, because then they would have to admit their error. Doing so would severely wound their great pride in themselves for being so “smart.” There is certainly nothing wrong with being super smart except when it blinds you to the reality of God:
The Book of Wisdom of Solomon:
13:1 For all men who were ignorant of God were foolish by nature; and they were unable from the good things that are seen to know him who exists,. nor did they recognize the craftsman while paying heed to his works;
2 but they supposed that either fire or wind or swift air, or the circle of the stars, or turbulent water, or the luminaries of heaven were the gods that rule the world.
3 If through delight in the beauty of these things men assumed them to be gods, let them know how much better than these is their Lord, for the author of beauty created them.
4 And if men were amazed at their power and working, let them perceive from them how much more powerful is he who formed them.
5 For from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator.
6 Yet these men are little to be blamed, for perhaps they go astray while seeking God and desiring to find him.
7 For as they live among his works they keep searching, and they trust in what they see, because the things that are seen are beautiful.
8 Yet again, not even they are to be excused;
9 For if they had the power to know so much that they could investigate the world, how did they fail to find sooner the Lord of these things?
For the record, most, if not all, of the early scientists were Christian, and they all reasoned that an intelligent God who created the intelligence of mankind would also make matter, electricity, laws of nature, and atomic particles “discoverable” in a rational and logical sequence by the human brain. In other words, studying an object or a process would be like peeling back the layers of an onion one at a time in a logical sequence without a lot of chaos and randomness. This example is how the scientific method was born. Here is what Johannes Kepler, a giant in the field of astronomy (1571-1630 AD) had to say about this fact:
“The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics.”
The Big Bang
To believe these celebrity atheist scientists, you have to believe that the Big Bang (discovered by a Catholic priest, Fr. Lemaitre) somehow created all of the timing, order, and beauty of the universe, along with living humans, giraffes, elephants, dogs, and other life forms, with no intelligent being (God) controlling the process! This proposition is hard for most logical people to fathom, and the Big Bang has certainly not been recreated in a laboratory using the scientific method. No, these scientists just assume that everything just kind of happened on its own; that is, supreme chaos created from nothing beautiful men and women who can procreate; created on its own, independent of men and women, a food supply so that men and women can eat and survive; that we are at a perfect location from the sun so that it doesn’t burn us and that we don’t all freeze to death; that water independently formed on the earth so that men and women and animals would have something to drink; and perfect gravity so that we can walk around and not fall off the earth. All of these independent variables just happening on their own and in just the right proportions to each other boggle my mind. Only when you consider a supremely intelligent creator of the universe does it all makes sense.
One of the great logical fallacies of atheists is that the universe somehow came into its order and timing and beauty all on its own, over time, a lot of time. We know that the universe is about 14 billion years old. But in real life, things fall apart over time. Just look at our bodies and how they go south after 60 or 70 years. Buildings tend to rot and decay and get moldy over time, rather than becoming more structural and beautiful. No, this misconception is one whopper that a lot of people buy into that doesn’t make any logical sense, especially when you consider that every other big bang (Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens, asteroids, for example) caused chaos and destruction, NOT timing and order and beauty. And no matter how much time you give a pile of logs, they will not form into a beautiful house on their own; only when an intelligent being forms them into 2” x 4” boards and brings nails and a hammer into the process can they be built into a house.
So what did some of the literary great minds of the 20th Century have to say about atheism?
C. S. Lewis on Atheism
“Supposing there was no intelligence behind the universe, no creative mind. In that case, nobody designed my brain for the purpose of thinking. It is merely that when the atoms inside my skull happen, for physical or chemical reasons, to arrange themselves in a certain way, this gives me, as a by-product, the sensation I call thought. But, if so, how can I trust my own thinking to be true? It’s like upsetting a milk jug and hoping that the way it splashes itself will give you a map of London. But if I can’t trust my own thinking, of course I can’t trust the arguments leading to Atheism, and therefore have no reason to be an Atheist, or anything else. Unless I believe in God, I cannot believe in thought: so I can never use thought to disbelieve in God.“
G. K. Chesterton on Atheism
“The Universe is the most extraordinary masterpiece ever constructed by nobody.”
The Beginning of Life
Atheists cannot answer the simple question of how life initially began on earth, instead focusing on the origin of species of life (evolution of one life form into another). To the logical mind, at least two original human beings, male and female, had to exist to create other humans. One celebrity atheist scientist, Richard Dawkins, said that maybe life began on earth when aliens came down here and initiated different life forms. But then who created those aliens in the first place? Others say that we “evolved” from amoebas in a primordial swamp, but then who created the amoebas in the first place, and can this theory be reconstructed in a laboratory environment using the scientific method? Probably not!
Quotes from Other Scientists on the Reality of God
Rene Descartes, French scientist, philosopher, and mathematician
“But as regards God, if I were not overwhelmed by philosophical prejudices, and if the images of things perceived by the senses did not besiege my thought on every side, I would certainly acknowledge him sooner and more easily than anything else. For what is more manifest than the fact that the supreme being exists, or that God, to whose essence alone existence belongs, exists?”
Isaac Newton, English mathematician, physicist, and astronomer
“All my discoveries have been made in answer to prayer.”
“I have a fundamental belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.”
Galileo Galilei, Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer
“The laws of nature are written by the hand of God in the language of mathematics.”
James Clerk Maxwell, Scottish physicist
“Almighty God, who has created man in Thine own image, and made him a living soul that he might seek after Thee, and have dominion over Thy creatures, teach us to study the works of Thy hands, that we may subdue the earth to our use, and strengthen the reason for Thy service; so to receive Thy blessed Word, that we may believe on Him whom Thou has sent, to give us the knowledge of salvation and the remission of sins. All of which we ask in the name of the same Jesus Christ, our Lord.”
Father Gregor Mendel, Augustinian monk and geneticist
“So natural and supernatural must unite to the realization of the holiness to the people. Man must contribute his minimum work of toil, and God gives the growth.”
Louis Pasteur, French chemist and microbiologist
“The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator.”
“Science brings men nearer to God.”
James Joule, English physisist and mathmetician
“After the knowledge of, and obedience to, the will of God, the next aim must be to know something of his attributes of wisdom, power and goodness as evidenced by His handiwork. “
Samuel Morse, American inventor of Morse code and the telegraph
“It is HIS work… “Not unto us, but to Thy Name, O Lord, be all the praise”.
“The nearer I approach to the end of my pilgrimage… the grandeur and sublimity of God’s remedy for fallen man are more appreciated.”
Werner Von Braun, German/American pioneer of space rockets
“An outlook… at the vast mysteries of the universe should only confirm our belief in the certainty of its Creator.”
“Scientific concepts exist only in the minds of men. Behind these concepts lies the reality which is being revealed to us, but only by the grace of God.”
Summary
Many, many other scientists were Christian. In fact, even our calendar came about because of a very famous Catholic, Pope Gregory XIII. As a result of replacing the old Julian calendar, ten days were skipped in 1582 AD to bring the date where it should be. This “Catholic calendar” is now used worldwide and is very accurate!
So the next time you see these “celebrity scientists” ranting about atheism, just know that they are either bluffing or are totally ignorant of the great earlier scientists on whose shoulders they stand.
