A red wave has appeared to hit the city of Detroit after former President Donald Trump decided to campaign in the inner city on Saturday, meeting with local leaders. Kwame Kilpatrick, who was the former Democratic mayor of the city has announced that he will endorse Trump instead of President Joe Biden.
Kilpatrick’s endorsement comes after he was pardoned by Trump in 2021. He was sentenced in 2013 and was expected to serve a 28-year sentence for bribery, extortion, fraud, and conspiracy. Kilpatrick’s pardon was one of Trump’s last acts before leaving the White House. He only served seven years in prison.
“I can never thank President Trump enough for what he’s done for me and my family by giving me freedom,” Kilpatrick said. “But I believe this election and the issues involved are personal to every family and every person in America.”
Kilpatrick is not the only black leader to stand behind Trump. Rep. John James (R-MI), the only black congressman serving Michigan, also expressed his support for a second Trump term.
“The way we make America Great Again is to make the black middle class strong again. The way we get ahead is to stop losing elections. The way we stop losing elections is to get both parties to listen,” he told the crowd at Saturday’s event.
Detroit restaurant owner Omar Mitchell expressed his support for Trump, stating that when he was president, “money was pumping” into minority communities. He also dismissed the stereotype that all blacks are Democrats.
“In the old days, how we grew up was just because you’re black means you’re a Democrat,” he said. “That’s out the door nowadays.”
More members of the black community are considering Trump over Biden. In a statement released by the Trump campaign on Saturday, the “Black Americans for Trump” coalition was announced, just ahead of the Juneteenth celebration occurring on June 19, designed to celebrate America’s abolition of slavery.
“Historic rates of Black voters now support President Trump,” the statement reads, “and the reason is simple: Black voters know that President Trump is the only presidential candidate who can deliver results on day one because he already has, including landmark unemployment rates for Black Americans, increased median income for Black households, historic permanent funding for HBCUs, comprehensive bipartisan criminal justice reform, and nearly $50 billion in funds to revitalize Opportunity Zones.”
The statement also mentions how Biden’s policies have negatively affected the Black community, like his reversal of the Trump administration’s America First policies.
According to recent numbers from Pew Research Center, Trump’s appeal to the black community is higher than it was in 2020. Last election, 88% of black voters identified as being Democrats.
Last month, 83% identified as Democrats, while 12% identified as Republicans, up from the 8% in 2020.
Trump reassured the citizens of Detroit that he would focus on building the economy back up, noting that blackloyment for the Black community was the lowest during his presidency.
Detroit resident Terrance Williams summed it up perfectly.
“Blacks are Americans and Americans come first,” he told the New York Post.
