Everyone thought they knew the names of the shortlist to be Donald Trump’s running mate.
But the one thing that’s for certain with Donald Trump is that nothing’s for certain.
And Donald Trump let the cat out of the bag on this surprise VP pick.
Donald Trump traveled to Washington for the first time since 2021 to meet with House and Senate Republicans.
The stated purpose of the visit was to discuss the agenda for Trump’s first 100 days in office should he win re-election in November.
Trump also spoke to reporters following the closed-door discussions.
Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie got right to the point and asked Trump if his running mate was in one of the meetings.
Senators Tom Cotton (R-AR), Marco Rubio (R-FL) and J.D. Vance (R-OH) as well as Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) were all reportedly sent vice-presidential vetting papers.
Trump didn’t want to tip his hand on who he would pick.
But Trump did reveal he would announce his pick the week of the convention.
“Probably. I don’t want to go, but I think (it) will probably get announced during the convention,” Trump told Hasnie.
“During the convention. There were some good people and, we have some very good people,” Trump emphasized.
Announcing his running mate the week of the convention has the benefit of taking away the oxygen from Judge Juan Merchan sentencing Trump to prison on July 11.
Polls show the conviction in Alvin Bragg’s show trial hasn’t moved the race in Joe Biden’s favor.
That’s going to put extra pressure on Merchan to sentence Trump to prison.
If Merchan doesn’t jail Trump, then everyone will see Bragg pursued a politically motivated case on joke charges that carried no real punishment just so Joe Biden could attack Trump as a convicted felon.
The only way to disguise that fact is if Merchan locks up Trump – a sentence wholly unjustified given Trump’s lack of prior record and the charges’ status as the lowest-level felony in the New York penal code.
But Trump could steal all that thunder with a vice-presidential pick that puts Democrats on defense.
Four consecutive polls now show Trump tied or leading in the blue state of Virginia.

That’s why Hasnie wondered if Trump would go for the kill and try and run up a real landslide win picking Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin as his running mate.
Trump sounded open to the idea.
“And I think I could consider that,” Trump answered.
“Yes. I haven’t been asked that question, but he would be on that list,” Trump stated.
Trump’s lead in the polls means his options for a running mate are wide open.
It also means every Republican in America wants the job.
And that could lead to a name no one thinks is in the mix ending up on the ticket.
