A black pastor from Detroit took a shot at former President Barack Obama on Saturday while hosting a meeting with former President Donald Trump and community leaders.
Rev. Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church was one of several community leaders who met with the former president during his campaign stop in Motor City.
“President Trump, I’m so humbled that you would be here,” he said, addressing the former president. “President Obama never came to the hood, so to speak, right? President Joe Biden—he went to the big NAACP dinner, but he never came to the hood. So, thank you.”
Sewell recalled the moment he received a call from the Trump campaign asking if he would be interested in having his church host an event with President 45. He stated that at first, he thought that he was “being punked.”
“For him to have a community conversation, I thought it was an opportunity to be able to really give the least of these, the disenfranchised and marginalized, an opportunity to have a voice at the table because typically we’re on the menu,” said Sewell.
“If you come to Grand River, if you walk through our community, you will see, quite frankly, that it’s desolate. … (Trump campaign officials) didn’t want to talk to people that had high prestige and high power positions. They wanted to talk to the least of these,” he continued.
For Sewell, this was a moment to have his concerns about his community heard. He pointed out that while Democrats seemed more concerned about what was going on in Gaza, none of them were concerned about what was happening in Detroit or America.
To him and the other leaders of Detroit, it was refreshing to have Trump, a former president, sit there and listen to what their concerns were.
For years, the left-wing media has declared that Trump is racist, often twisting his words to fit their agenda. Considering that Obama, the first black president, passed on going into the inner cities where there is a prominent minority population, shows the Democrats’ agenda.
Every election year, Democrats pander to black voters, making several promises and making the Republican party appear as bigots. While Democrats have been talking a good game and not delivering, Trump has been going into the neighborhoods that liberals claim to care about but ignore.
“We achieved the lowest African American unemployment rate and the lowest African American poverty rate ever recorded during my 4 years,” Trump announced to the audience, arguing that he has done more for the black community than the first black president.
Sewell wasn’t the only person in attendance who praised Trump. Another community leader commended the former president on his compassion for the U.S. military.
“We had a president who loved our soldiers,” he said, “and we need to put our president back in office!”
Detroit isn’t the only impoverished area that the former president has visited.
Keeping his word, Trump held a rally in the Bronx last month, another area where there is a huge minority population. There were so many in attendance that even CNN host Anderson Cooper was concerned about the number of minorities present.
